Job Summary
Reporting to the Director, Health, Safety & Environment (HSE), the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Specialist is responsible for driving a strong safety culture and ensuring the health, safety, and environmental compliance of our Ridge Facility (Markham, ON). This role acts as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor to facility leadership, providing hands-on support, and strategic guidance on a wide range of HSE matters.
The HSE Specialist plays a lead role in identifying and assessing potential workplace hazards, investigating incidents, and implementing effective corrective actions to reduce risk. The HSE Specialist will collaborate cross-functionally to deliver impactful safety initiatives from new hire HSE training, to incident investigation, and Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) support. They will facilitate safety inspections, analyze incident trends, manage compliance documentation, and contribute to return-to-work planning in partnership with HR.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a subject matter expert to support facility leadership on all HSE-related matters that impact operations, compliance, and employee wellbeing. Foster a culture of safety by proactively identifying and assessing potential workplace hazards and opportunities for improvement.
- Develop, implement, and monitor effective HSE programs that meet or exceed regulatory requirements and company standards.
- Lead and support thorough incident investigations, ensuring all incidents are accurately documented, root causes are identified, and timely corrective and preventative actions are implemented.
- Analyze incident and near-miss data to identify trends, assess risk, and recommend continuous improvement initiatives to reduce workplace injuries and exposures.
- Design and deliver engaging HSE training, education, and awareness programs to ensure employees understand and follow safe work practices.
- Conduct comprehensive new hire HSE orientations and ongoing training sessions to reinforce safety expectations and procedures.
- Collaborate closely with Human Resources in the management of WSIB claims, modified duties, and return-to-work plans, ensuring alignment with medical recommendations and company policies.
- Oversee the safe use of tools and equipment, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, proper installation, and routine inspections or maintenance schedules.
- Plan, schedule, and support the monthly Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings, including preparation of agendas, action item tracking, and monthly workplace inspections.
- Provide hands-on support to departments through participation in safety meetings, site walkthroughs, and creation of safety-related communications or materials.
- Conduct regular audits and proactive risk assessments, including ergonomic evaluations, job hazard analyses, and PPE compliance checks.
- Assist in the development and testing of emergency response procedures, including drills and evacuation plans.
- Stay informed of evolving regulatory requirements and industry best practices, and incorporate relevant changes into the facility’s safety management system.
- Prepare reports and dashboards to track HSE performance metrics and communicate progress to leadership.
- Promote employee engagement by encouraging participation in safety initiatives, campaigns, and continuous improvement opportunities.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3-5 years of HSE experience.
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field is preferred.
- CRSP designation is an asset.
- Experience in Manufacturing, Pharmaceutical or Food Production is considered an asset.
- Experience conducting HSE training and engagement programs across multiple departments and organizational levels.
- Demonstrated success in leading incident investigations, hazard assessments, and the implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with incident reporting software is an asset.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant occupational health and safety laws, regulations, and best practices, including local, provincial, and federal requirements (i.e., WSBC, WSIB, WHMIS).
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to lead, motivate, and influence cross-functional teams to prioritize safety and achieve HSE objectives.
- Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively with functional teams, leadership, employees, and external stakeholders, fostering a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and customer-focused service.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a solid customer service orientation.
- Strong communication and presentations skills.
- Ability to make informed and timely decisions, particularly in emergency situations or when responding to safety incidents.
- This is an onsite role. Occasional support or visits may be required on an as needed basis to other sites within Canada.
