Position Description

Basic Function: The Head Caretaker is responsible for the routine maintenance and operation of the school’s physical facilities and assists the school administration with the daily physical operation of the school.

Working Relationship: Reports to the Operations Supervisor. Accepts direction from Principal. Responsible for cleaning staff assigned to the school.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum education level of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Graduation from an approved building operations and power engineering course is desirable.
  • Valid 5th Class Power Engineer’s Certificate from the Province of Manitoba.
  • Two years of successful experience in building operations work, including use of web‑based work ordering, e‑mail and computer software for productivity.
  • Leadership ability for caretaking staff.
  • Reading, writing and verbal skills in English essential.
  • Ability to work day shifts and respond to emergency calls evenings and weekends.
  • Good general fitness; ability to pick up 45 lbs and carry 60 ft.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain routine communication with Principal and Operations Supervisor regarding maintenance work orders, cleaning of school, use by permit groups and overall operation.
  • Report thefts, break‑ins, vandalism or abuse of school property to Principal and Director of Facilities.
  • Communicate concerns of caretaking staff to Principal/Operations Supervisor.
  • Inspect facility to ensure overall care of building, safety and comfort.
  • Check HVAC systems and report malfunctions.
  • Inspect building and grounds, including play structures, and take corrective action.
  • Ensure entrances and emergency exit routes are kept clean and clear of debris/snow.
  • Regularly check fire extinguishers, hoses, emergency lighting and alarms; report deficiencies.
  • Assist during emergency evacuations and other emergencies.
  • Ensure security procedures at close of shift: check doors, windows, security lighting and intruder alarm activation.
  • Perform cleaning activities to keep facility functional throughout school day.
  • Cleans outside windows, sweeps/mops hallways, entrances, washrooms as needed; refills dispensers; disposes lunch garbage; cleans mechanical rooms as required.
  • Plan and direct seasonal cleaning projects with Operations Supervisor and other department personnel.
