A regional conservation authority is seeking a Head Camp Counsellor to coordinate and deliver engaging camp programs for various age groups. This role includes supervising campers, ensuring safety compliance, and developing camp activities. Ideal candidates will have a post-secondary education, lifeguard certification, and at least 2 years of experience working with children. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and live on-site during camp is required.
How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:The Head Camp Counsellor is responsible for coordinating the daily operations and interactive program development and delivery of activities of camps for various age groups within TRCA’s portfolio of facilities and sites.Major Responsibilities:
Develop and lead camp activities.Develops and leads interactive and engaging camp programs for summer camp groups of all ages and abilitiesProvides supervision of campers to ensure compliance with camp rules and prevent accidentsCoordinates the daily preparation, schedule and clean-up of camp programs, ensuring proper use of camp facilities and equipmentReports and records any incidents, such as accidents or rule violations, to senior camp staffProvides support to junior staff related to position activitiesResponds to minor to moderate level parent concerns, while escalating severe concerns to SupervisorProvides guidance and training to team members on a regular basis, working with the supervisor to align workload and tasks
What will you need to succeed:Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
Minimum pursuing a post-secondary diploma or degree in a related fieldValid Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C CertificationSuccessful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Screening. Employees/candidates under the age of eighteen (18) years are not eligible to have a VSS, therefore will not be requiredMust hold a current and valid NLS (National Lifeguard Service) lifeguard certification; certification must be kept valid throughout employment or Bronze Cross
Experience
2+ years of previous camp experience or working with children in a group settingExperience developing age appropriate, engaging, and interactive programs and activitiesExperience in overnight camp settingCanoeing experience (dependent on location).
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
Strong communication skills to provide clear and concise communication in both non-emergency and emergency situationsDemonstrated ability to proactively identify problems in a timely manner, seeking the appropriate level of support to solve issuesExcellent organization and time management skillsAbility to work independently and co-operatively as part of a teamMust be flexible to work all required shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidaysSupport overnight supervision of campersStaff required to live onsite for the duration of campMust be available to stay on-site (including overnight) for the duration of the contract (dependent on location)
