Job description

Smoky Lake County is currently seeking a highly independent and technical professional to join our team as a Full-Time Permanent GIS Technician.

In this role, you will be responsible for managing the GIS data systems that drive our decision-making and operational efficiency. This position requires more than just technical maintenance; it involves active collaboration with internal departments to identify gaps, implement solutions, and demonstrate how accurate data can streamline County operations.

Position Overview
  • Database Management & Analysis: Create, maintain, and optimize complex databases. You will be responsible for the integrity of our data systems and performing analysis to support County decision-making.
  • Internal Support & Advocacy: Provide exceptional customer service to internal departments and external third parties. You will work collaboratively with the team to demonstrate the value of GIS data and help them utilize it to increase operational efficiency.
  • Strategic Development & Operational Excellence: You will drive the County’s long-term GIS strategy and data accuracy by resolving conflicting information through field research, while continuously identifying opportunities to streamline workflows, reduce turnaround times, and deliver seamless service to internal teams.
  • Administrative: Responsible for managing contracts, licensing, and budget with regard to GIS operations for the County.
  • Asset Management Champion: Act as the Coordinator for the County’s Asset Management data. You will champion the program, ensuring accurate asset data is maintained to support long-term infrastructure planning and lifecycle management.
Qualifications
  • Two-year diploma or 4-year degree, or equivalent course work at a technical or vocational school, in geographic information system, geography, planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering, computer science, or a related field, and/or five years of experience working with geographic information systems.
  • Experience with GIS software, such as Catalis Webmap, QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth Pro, and Certified Tracking System. Municipal experience preferred.
  • Must be able to create and maintain databases and analyze data.
  • Experience with Asset Management is preferred.
  • Ability to assess and handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines involving complex and evolving practices.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills including written communication, listening, speaking, problem-solving, discretion and tact.
  • Organizational skills for timely and appropriate dissemination of internal and external information.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft platform and Adobe is an asset.
  • Class 5 Alberta driver’s license.
