Job description

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for a Geotechnical Engineer specializing in Tunneling and Trenchless Technologies to join our team in British Columbia Operations. This role can be based in Victoria, Vancouver, or Kamloops, depending on the successful candidate's location.

Thurber is a specialized consulting firm focusing on geotechnical engineering. Our projects include transportation, infrastructure, natural hazards, development, and more. We undertake challenging assignments involving steep terrain, deep foundations, compressible soils, landslides, contamination, and other complexities.

As a Geotechnical Engineer, you will work on varied projects, developing your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.

Responsibilities
  1. Conduct geotechnical investigations, structural design, instrumentation, and analysis of tunnels (cut-and-cover, mined, mechanized);
  2. Design temporary portal shoring, including concrete tangent piles and soil nailing;
  3. Design of directionally drilled pipeline crossings;
  4. Assess stability, surface settlements, and structural damages;
  5. Prepare Geotechnical Baseline Reports;
  6. Evaluate dewatering, grouting, ground freezing, TBM selection, vibrations from blasting, seismic aspects, and tunnel rehabilitation;
  7. Provide technical support and leadership, including technical reviews and analyses;
  8. Assist in project coordination, cost estimates, tender submissions, reports, scheduling, and meeting deadlines and budgets;
  9. Scope projects and prepare proposals;
  10. Mentor, coach, and train staff;
  11. Collaborate with the Branch Manager on new business opportunities;
  12. Develop and maintain client relationships;
  13. Participate actively in fieldwork as needed to meet project goals;
  14. Manage projects and lead multidisciplinary teams.
Qualifications and Assets
  1. Post-secondary degree in Civil or Geological Engineering;
  2. Master’s degree in Geotechnical or related field (preferred);
  3. At least 10 years of relevant experience;
  4. In-depth knowledge of Tunneling and Trenchless Technologies;
  5. Experience with local Canadian geology and practices;
  6. Class 5 Driver’s license;
  7. Proficiency in English (spoken and written);
  8. Eligibility for EGBC membership.

Base Salary Range
  • $90,000 – $130,000 per year, based on a 40-hour work week;
  • Salary may be adjusted upward for highly qualified candidates;
  • Less experienced candidates may be considered at a lower wage.
