The University of Toronto invites applications for a Sessional Lecturer in their Praxis II course, part of engineering education. This role focuses on teaching design and communication, supporting 250 students across multiple sections, with responsibilities including co-instruction of studios and evaluation of student work. Course description: Praxis II follows from Praxis I and challenges students to apply, enhance, and refine their engineering design and communication skills. The design projects in Praxis II are both identified and defined by the students themselves and focus on issues associated with the City of Toronto, its agencies and services, and its communities and citizens. In the first half of the course students, working in small teams, identify, frame, and document appropriate engineering challenges; in the second half they design, prototype, and present engineering solutions to a subset of those identified challenges. In support of these activities, students continue to explore in greater depth the theories, tools, and practices of engineering design and communication. Praxis II culminates in an open showcase where students present their design solutions to representatives from interested governmental and non-governmental agencies, to their project stakeholders, and to the general public.

Number of Positions (est.): One (1) position.
Estimated TA support: Some assessment may be performed alongside design-focused teaching assistants; some studios may be supported by design-focused teaching assistants.
Estimated course enrolment: 250 students, in 10 studio sections of ≈ 25 students each.
Class schedule: Lectures M1500/T1300/F1300 (instructors are expected to attend two of three each week).
Tutorials W0900-1100, W1300-1500, R1300-1500, F0900-1100. Weekly Teaching Team meeting, to be scheduled. Weekly Debrief Meeting W1100-1200.
Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2024 – April 30, 2024
Hours: 1.25 HCE (up to a maximum of 285 hours)
Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates for a half course (HCE), inclusive of vacation pay, are: Sessional Lecturer 1 - $9,457.90; Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term - $9,930.79; Sessional Lecturer 2 - $10,121.77; Sessional Lecturer 2 Long Term - $10,326.62; Sessional Lecturer 3 - $10,362.76 and Sessional Lecturer 3 Long Term - $10,570.02. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.
Minimum Qualifications: include at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications: include a PhD in an appropriate discipline (as above), and TESL or other training/certification in second-language instruction at the university level, and familiarity with engineering communication practices, and strong performance as an instructor in Praxis I or II. Flexible availability for studio and benchmarking meetings is also preferred.
Description of duties:
attending two lectures per week throughout the term
attending two one-hour weekly course planning meetings (after Friday lecture and the first studio of the week)
teaching studios: co-instructing two 2-hour studios per week with a design TA; preparing for studio teaching, and participating in studio planning, revision, and discussion; participating in short debriefing meetings after first and second studios of the week
evaluating and delivering detailed feedback on up to five assignments (both group and individual), and attending benchmarking meeting(s) for assignment grading (to be scheduled)
assisting with studio prep, including developing lesson plans and other materials for dissemination to the larger group of instructors
assisting with assignment design and assessment, including contributing to and developing rubrics and spot-checking teaching team’s feedback
attending & evaluating at all-day design Showcase scheduled for April 15, 2024
supervising and mentoring both individuals and teams within your studios; holding consultations with students to help them complete and improve their assignments, and develop as writers and presenters
developing curriculum for supporting students outside of regular classes, and providing extracurricular support for students in need of help
must be able to meet tight marking deadlines for an oral presentation (mid-Jan) and one key assignment over Reading Week
calibrating assessment between assessors across assignments
creating and distributing studio plans in conjunction with the teaching team
helping to equip studios with necessary resources
having ability to convert to online duties if required
