Job description
Overview

Strathcona County is seeking an Environmental Planning Specialist to play a key role in advancing the County’s sustainability and climate initiatives.

This position is responsible for administering the Clean Energy Improvement Program, leading the implementation of the Climate Resilience Plan, and providing expertise in land use planning, environmental monitoring, and resource management.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze and process Clean Energy Improvement Program applications including coordinating interdepartmental eligibility checks, drafting and circulating agreements, liaising with Alberta Municipalities and issuing approvals
  • Manage grant applications, program tracking and reporting
  • Lead a technical working group of multidisciplinary professionals to support the County’s Climate Resilience Plan and create an implementation strategy
  • Conduct field assessments to determine biophysical considerations for subdivisions, development and construction activities, including analyzing and identifying impacts with regards to land use
  • Coordinate and complete Environmental Framework programs, projects and initiatives
  • Participate in and lead air, water, land and biodiversity monitoring
  • Supervise and direct consultants to ensure work is performed in compliance with policies, standards and safety requirements
  • Provide accurate, technical information related to Agriculture and Environment programs, projects and initiatives to internal departments, external stakeholders and residents
  • Review and provide technical expertise for development applications
Qualifications and Skills
  • Post-secondary degree in Environmental Studies and 1 year of experience in the environmental field or a post-secondary diploma in Environmental Studies and 3 years of experience in the environmental field
  • Eligible for designation as a Professional Agrologist or Registered Technologist in Agrology or Professional Biologist would be an asset
  • Knowledge of municipal, provincial and federal policies and legislation
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and technical writing skills are essential to effectively communicate with multidisciplinary teams and the general public
  • Ability to effectively convey technical concepts for all audiences
  • Ability to work and participate in a team environment and at times lead and supervise the team
Conditions of Employment
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time
