Job summary

A community educational organization in Powell River seeks a dedicated professional to support early childhood development and engage families in educational programs for children aged 0-6. The ideal candidate has a degree in Early Childhood Development and experience working with families, especially within Indigenous communities. Salary Or Wage: $29.03 to $30.21 per hour

  • Completion of a certificate/diploma/degree from a recognized educational institution in Early Childhood Development, Child & Youth Care, Social Work, or a related field
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with families *Equivalent education and experience will be considered
  • Experience working within an Indigenous community would be an asset.
  • Successful Criminal Record Check, with Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Class 5 Driver’s License and clean Driver’s Abstract
  • First Aid & CPR Certification, or willingness to obtain
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Knowledge of child development
  • Knowledge of group process and facilitation techniques
  • Knowledge, understanding, and respect of Tla’amin First Nation cultural practices
  • Knowledge of ʔayʔaǰuθəm would be an asset
  • Good organization, time, and general management skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of the community and its resources
List of Duties
  • Identifying and engaging families of children 0 – 6 years of age and connecting them to existing programs and services for this age group
  • Provides interactive and supportive information and activities related to healthy ECD
  • Increases community and social connections for families and children
  • Refers families to appropriate programs
  • Organizing and implementing a regular schedule of ECD-related workshops in the areas of parenting and child development for Tla’amin community families
  • Increases the ability of families and staff to support healthy growth and development of infants and young children, in order to meet age‑appropriate growth and developmental milestones
  • Promotes the health, mental health, and well‑being of infants and young children and of families with children
  • Promotes parent child attachment
  • Provides age‑appropriate group activities according to developmental stages of children 0 – 6 years of age (ie. parent drop‑in group focused on nutritious cooking, etc.)
  • Sources and develops resources (ie. pamphlets, posters, etc.) for families and community
  • Works with the Indigenous Supported Child Development team and others to increase awareness in the Tla’amin community of the developmental issues and challenges faced by children aged 0 – 6 years of age
  • Collaborates with other professionals of Tla’amin Nation and relevant qathet region partners (ie. members of the Early Years Planning Table) in the execution of their duties
  • Supporting Tla’amin early childhood program staff’s ability to regularly participate in early childhood relevant fieldtrips
  • Collaborates with staff to identify good field trip opportunities
  • Organizes and facilitates all details of field trips
  • Communication with host facility (when relevant)
  • Communication with families and ensuring permission forms are completed
  • Organizing transportation
  • Emergency preparedness and safety measures
  • Developing and maintaining a resource program aimed at providing families of children 0‑6 years the essential resources to support healthy child development based on guidelines provided by Admin
  • Sources and purchases ECD resources for Tla’amin families in community and outside the qathet region
  • Communicates clear ECD resource program parameters to each relevant family
  • Ensures urban families receive needed resources
  • Maintains rigorous records of resources provided to families
  • Has responsibility for the ECD Outreach budget and required reporting to external funder(s)
  • Completing and maintaining accurate reports, documents, and records, while maintaining confidentiality (ie. related to grant funding)
  • Provides relevant communication, program information, and reporting to administration and funders
  • Ensures all required documentation is complete on time for programming
  • Working in collaboration with parents/caregivers, early childhood education staff, team members, and relevant service providers/agencies in the execution of their duties
  • Participates as an active and supportive member of the Nation’s early childhood team
  • Participates in program planning
  • Supports traditional cultural teachings and practice for children in our programs to promote healthy physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual development
  • Provides supportive professional relationships with the parents, caregivers, and extended family of the children within the Nation’s early childhood programs
  • Attends and participate in meetings when appointed
  • Attends in‑service workshops and training
  • Supports the team to support the requirements of Childcare Program Licensing
  • Performing all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin laws, regulations, policies, practices, and procedures as directed by the Manager of Early Childhood Education.
    Performs other related duties as required.
  • Supports new initiatives and programs of Tla’amin Nation
  • Participates as assigned by Manager on committees related to duties, family support, or programming
  • Maintaining confidentiality as required, pertaining to Tla’amin citizens, clients, employees, as well as general matters of the Nation.
