Position Overview

The Director, Health and Safety will be responsible for developing, implementing and managing Occupational Health and Safety Programs across ChangeMakers (the Company) with special focus on the First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan's Principle Claims Helper Program (the Program). The main duties of this role will be working with senior leadership, employees and stakeholders to develop and implement strategies, polices and approaches that position the Company and the Program as a safe workplace using trauma-informed and culturally safe practices, that will protect individuals and the organization, reduce lost time due to injuries and illnesses, and improve productivity. This role will ensure compliance with external health and safety bodies and provide support to the internal teams when it comes to provincial and territory specific labour laws and health and safety regulations, including claims, accident reporting, and compliance with the relevant occupational health and safety legislation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and deployment of comprehensive safety programs founded on sound data analysis, and industry best practices that are trauma-informed and culturally safe.
  • Foster and maintain a health and safety culture across all levels of the organization by developing clear policies, procedures, and processes that are practical and actionable in day-to-day operations through leadership, employee engagement and regular assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with external health and safety bodies and provide support to the internal teams when it comes to provincial and territory specific labour laws and health and safety regulations, including claims, accident reporting, and compliance with the relevant occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Act as a liaison between the company and provincial / territory occupational health and safety bodies for ongoing claims management.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to continuously develop and integrate the strategies across both organizations
  • Investigate incidents and accidents, conduct root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Additional work such as Workplace Inspections and Audits, Workers' Claims and Return to Work, Emergency Response and Preparedness

Required Skills and Competencies

Must have :

  • Bachelor's Degree, Diploma, or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or related field with knowledge of relevant legislation (OHSA, WSI Act, OHRC, AODA, and applicable codes and standards)
  • Proven experience in developing, implementing and managing progressive programs and policies related to Health, Safety and Wellbeing
  • Experience applying project and change management principles to Health & Safety initiatives
  • Experience working in a Health & Safety capacity for community-based programs
  • Lived or work experience with Indigenous communities is preferred
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to travel as required
  • Valid driver's license

Good to have :

  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or working towards it
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Bilingualism (English & French) is an asset

Salary Range : 125,000-150,000
