Overview

Reporting into the VP of Operations, the Director of Transportation is a strategic operator who will lead and optimize the company’s regional transportation operations.

Overseeing a team of multidisciplinary profiles (Dispatch, Trucking supervisors, Conformity specialist) and a fleet of approximately 150 drivers across Montreal, Quebec, Atlantic Canada, and Maine, and coordination with independent truck drivers, this role is responsible for ensuring safe, cost-effective, and compliant transportation of materials while driving strategic improvements in routing, fleet utilization, and driver performance.

The ideal candidate has a successful record of operational expertise and still share strategic vision to elevate transportation as a key driver of business success and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities

What you\'re responsible for:

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive transportation strategy aligned with company goals.
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction, service improvement, and operational scalability.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to integrate transportation with procurement, sales, and operations.
  • Evaluate and implement emerging technologies to enhance logistics performance.
  • Act as a logistic advisor in the organization

Operational Excellence

  • Oversee daily transportation operations across multiple regions, ensuring timely and safe delivery of materials.
  • Manage driver schedules, dispatch coordination, and fleet maintenance.
  • Ensure that independent truck drivers follow company guidelines and that all transportation and rental contracts as well as insurance documentation are kept up to date and organized. Also ensure supportive relationships with that scope
  • Monitor and improve KPIs including fuel efficiency, route optimization, delivery accuracy, and safety compliance.
  • Ensure effective utilization of assets and resources to maximize productivity.

Team Development & Leadership

  • Lead and mentor a team of regional transportation supervisors, dispatchers, conformity specialists, and driver supervisors.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Implement training programs to enhance driver performance and retention.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and succession planning.

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure full compliance with Canadian and U.S. transportation regulations, including DOT and provincial standards (Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Maine).
  • Maintain accurate records for audits, inspections, and reporting.
  • Champion safety initiatives and lead incident investigations.
  • Collaborate with HR and legal teams on regulatory updates and risk mitigation.

Technology Integration

  • Oversee implementation and optimization of fleet management systems.
  • Leverage data analytics to drive decision-making and performance improvements.
  • Evaluate software solutions for routing, scheduling, and compliance tracking.
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in transportation or logistics industry.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics or Business Administration;
  • 10 years of management experience in the transportation field;
  • Proficient in computer skills and knowledgeable in ELD (Electronic Logging Device) systems;
  • Strong team manager and effective, engaging communicator;
  • Customer service-oriented with a strong results-driven mindset;
  • Organized, analytical, and pragmatic;
  • Recognized for negotiation skills and conflict management;
  • Fully bilingual in French and English, both spoken and written;
  • Able to develop and maintain good interpersonal relationships while consistently demonstrating professionalism;
  • Knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metals (an asset).
