The Director, Communications is a member of the Senior Leadership Team who is accountable for the planning, implementation and effectiveness of all internal and external communication for the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, the Brockville Mental Health Centre and the Institute for Mental Health Research (IMHR). The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group (The Royal) is undergoing a major transformation and in this role you will be a key contributor in shaping our new strategic plan and elevating our workplace culture. You are a leader who can manage multiple projects and strategic communication programs from concept through completion with focus on sharing positive news that supports the care we provide, research projects and fundraising opportunities. In partnership with the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health and through relationships with our community partners you will enhance awareness of Mental Health and the supports and programs available to those in our region who will benefit from them most.
IN THIS POSITION YOU WILL:
Lead a team of communication specialists who will execute all internal and external strategic messaging through various forums including town halls, social media, written communication, special media events and our internal and external websites.
Develop a communications strategy that is aligned and supports the overall Royal strategic plan.
Proactively work with Senior Leaders to anticipate communication needs that support the Royal’s goals and objectives and that will bring greater visibility and understanding of mental health issues affecting our community.
Develop media relations strategies to promote the Royal and IMHR, share information through press releases and act as a media liaison and Royal spokesperson in coordination with the President & CEO.
Oversee and manage all communication either planned or through crisis management.
Promote the Royal as a leader and partner in mental health care and support and instil an environment of open and transparent communication.
Lead the development of crisis communication plans and manage communication during any crises, ensuring clear, transparent, and timely messaging to all stakeholders.
In partnership with the Royal Ottawa Hospital Foundation for Mental Health develop, launch and maintain the new Royal brand.
Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all channels, both internal and external. Protect and enhance the hospital’s brand identity.
Participate as a key stakeholder in the implementation of the REVEL change management model.
Oversee the translation of all materials to ensure all external communication is presented accurately in both official languages and accountable for the Official Languages program in partnership with HR.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE:
A minimum of an Undergraduate degree in Communications, Public Relations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
8-10 years of related communications or media experience; with at least 5 years in a leadership role preferably in a hospital environment.
Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills.
Proven track record in developing strategic communication plans and adhoc high quality communication materials in a timely and efficient manner.
Experience in media relations and crisis communications.
Strong writing, copy editing and proofreading skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple competing priorities with a focus of on time delivery.
Bilingualism (French and English in oral expression, comprehension, reading and writing strongly preferred).
