We invite applications for substantive consultant positions at OUH. These posts will suit anaesthetists seeking Consultant career in a world class University Hospital with considerable expertise in major complex cancer surgery, vascular and major trauma, ENT, Head and Neck specialist work, plastics surgery , spinal surgery, stroke thrombectomy, neurosurgical and interventional radiology cases.

The successful candidates will join specific on‑call groups depending upon departmental needs.

The Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics is one of the largest departments in the country. The department is well known for having a friendly, diverse and inclusive Anaesthetics team, supported by outstanding surgical colleagues. The department provides a comprehensive elective and emergency service for a wide range of surgical and diagnostics specialties.

Main duties of the job

The main focus of the jobs is delivery of high‑quality anaesthesia in major complex cancer surgery, vascular and major trauma, ENT, Head and Neck specialist work, plastics surgery , spinal surgery, stroke thrombectomy , neurosurgical and interventional radiology cases. In addition, there will be opportunities to maintain and develop other specialist interests by flexible sessions.

Out of hours, the postholders will be expected to provide on‑call cover at numerous hospital sites depending upon the departmental needs.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

The focus of these post is the delivery of high-quality anaesthesia for major cancer surgery, complex vascular procedures, major trauma, orthopaedics and plastics trauma surgery. There are in addition flexible sessions in the posts allowing the post-holder to maintain an interest and skills in other areas of anaesthesia. Out of hours the post-holders will be on call to provide emergency cover for general surgery, trauma, specialist surgery including vascular procedures, plastics, ENT, stroke thrombectomy and transplantation depending upon their specialist interests and clinical experience.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holders will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holders contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

Clinical Governance

The post-holders will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

Personal and Professional Development

The post-holders will be required to keep fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust through Appraisal.

Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.

Management

The post-holders will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. They will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.

Qualifications/Training
  • Medical degree FRCA or equivalent
  • CCT in Anaesthesia (or equivalent) or within 6 months at the date of interview Advanced training or fellowship in the sub-specialist clinical area
  • ALS/ATLS/APLS provider
Experience
  • To be able to work independently at consultant level and perform as a member of a team.
  • Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems
  • Advanced training or fellowship, or experience in the sub -specialist clinical area.
  • Evidence of completion of additional training in other relevant sub-specialty
  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.
  • Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level
Skills and knowledge
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital
  • Effective administrative and time management skills
