Position: Compositing Supervisor

Hiring Range: $149,500 to $175,000/year for a 40 hour work week

Project Contract: Start January 2026 - 1 year contract

POSITION PURPOSE

The Compositing Supervisor will lead by example, deliver briefs and set the quality standards for all compositing work completed. They will review and finalize all frames before submission. They will coach, guide and provide feedback to artists ensuring detailed and high-quality work is delivered to Image Engine clients. Compositing Supervisors will be responsible for employee performance management and supervision.

Equally, the Compositing Supervisor will establish themselves as a key member of the leadership team and will build relationships with all Image Engine Supervisors and Leads. They will leverage their relationships with department Supervisors to build cross-departmental efficiencies. They will communicate with the Leads, Production Managers and Producers to develop cost-effective bids to assist Image Engine in procuring new business opportunities.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for giving creative direction to Leads and artists, to pursue the VFX Supervisor's (and ultimately the client's) vision.
  • Maintain high quality standards within the department, by assisting artists (in conjunction with Leads) with clear feedback and mentorship.
  • Develop a collaborative relationship with the Production Manager, VFX Supervisor, CG Supervisor, and other Department Supervisors to ensure a fair and efficient methodology is developed to execute the work to a high standard & accurate schedule.
  • Define accurate internal bid days, and make recommendations for how to efficiently schedule the work and resolve competing priorities.
  • Assign and schedule tasks, along with the coordinator, to ensure shots are adequately cast to the right artists. This should keep skillset and career growth in mind.
  • Stay on top of the latest technology both internally at IE, and externally, to ensure an up-to-date workflow & facility-wide consistency within the department.
  • Suggest and drive workflow improvements for the facility.
  • Assist the Compositing Head of Department & Department Manager to identify gaps in the team's skillset.
  • Interview, hire and train the Comp team to be highly skilled, diverse and well-rounded.
  • Engage in the performance management process such as performance reviews, daily feedback, and mentoring
  • Manage workflow to balance production schedule and employee resources, meeting weekly targets
  • Communicate artist surplus or deficits to ensure profit and loss margins are maximized
  • Utilize effective communication skills to receive client notes and deliver instructions/feedback to artists
  • Ensure quality standards are met by administering quality control checks for all artist’s work before every delivery to client
  • Communicate with external vendors to provide feedback and directions for all assigned tasks
  • Provide recommendations/technical solutions for effective task completion
  • Proactively communicate & collaborate with other department supervisors
  • Design and develop procedural and innovative tool sets, pipelines and techniques for the Compositors, alongside the Compositing Lead.
  • Promote interdepartmental collaboration within the Compositing team
  • Provide assistance to junior artists in the event an assigned task proves to be too difficult
  • Attend and coordinate meetings with clear agendas with other departments
  • Stay on the pulse of all activities surrounding the assigned project
  • Understand elements impacting other departments to foresee/prevent challenges in compositing department
  • Process requests from upstream departments
  • Use time management skills to schedule meetings and tasks effectively
  • Complete complex Compositing tasks including blue/greenscreen keys, CG character/object integration into plate photography, creating light & shadow elements, full-CG shots, etc. when required
  • Mentor junior artists
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • 5+ years’ experience in compositing digital VFX for film
  • 2+ years of experience as a lead
  • Supervisory experience is an asset
  • Experience with complex matte extractions and motion tracking
  • Understanding of photography, physics and lighting
  • Excellent attention to detail when finalizing, approving or quality controlling shots
  • Ability to balance quick turnaround while achieving a high degree of aesthetic quality

Technical skills
  • Expert knowledge of Compositing workflows in Nuke, and how to make aesthetically pleasing and technically sound photorealistic imagery.
  • Understanding of the Supervisor role & best practices
  • Ability to train and coach artists in optimal Compositing techniques and best practices
  • Strong aptitude for technical workflow challenges between departments, industry-standard conventions, and automation tools.
  • Excellent eye for detail for quality control
