Position Overview

The Communications Assistant supports Africa Centre’s communications work with afocus on storytelling, multimedia content and podcast studio management. The role alsoprovides strategic support for the Centre's head office in Edmonton and growingpresence in Calgary.The position requires strong multimedia skills, creative thinking and the ability to producestories that connect with funders and stakeholders. The assistant works closely with the
communications team to deliver cohesive and consistent communications across the
organization. French is required.

Key responsibilities
Multimedia content

  • Create multimedia content, including design, photography and video, to support
    Africa Centre’s brand and goals
  • Use Adobe Creative Suite programs to develop professional and engaging materials
  • Capture and document events and initiatives in innovative and compelling ways

Podcast studio and storytelling

  • Manage Africa Centre’s video podcast studio, including scheduling, setup and
    technical support
  • Produce podcasts with strong audio and video quality that highlight community
    stories and advocacy
  • Support external partners and projects using the studio
  • Develop content strategies that reflect Africa Centre’s values
  • Craft narratives that showcase the Centre's impact in Edmonton and Calgary
  • Experiment with written, video and audio formats to expand reach

Collaboration and strategy

  • Work with the communications team to plan creative strategies that expand
    Africa Centre’s influence
  • Support the development of communications strategies that align with
    organizational goals
  • Ensure communications are consistent across offices and programs
    Bilingual communications and engagement
  • Create and support with bilingual content for English- and French-speaking
    audiences
  • Manage and contribute to social media platforms with engaging content
  • Support live content creation during events, especially in bilingual settings

Fundraising and stakeholder work

  • Produce stories and materials that appeal to funders and partners
  • Highlight Africa Centre’s impact to help attract and retain funding
  • Ensure all communications reflect the Centre's mission and values
  • The role requires frequent evening and weekend work at events.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in communications, journalism, public relations or
    marketing is an asset
  • Minimum two years of related experience
  • Skills in multimedia content creation, including design, photography and video
  • Experience in podcast production and studio management
  • Proven storytelling ability
  • Strong French and English, spoken and written
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite programs
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to collaborate with team members across offices
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Experience producing content for diverse communities and stakeholders
  • Knowledge of social media best practices and online engagement
