Job Title: Cognos Specialist

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba

Overview: Our client in Winnipeg, MB is looking for a Cognos Specialist resource for a 6+ month contract to start with the possibility of extensions, reference 227-0925. The position can be remote and candidates can be located anywhere in Canada.

What you will be doing:
  • Lead the planning and execution of the Cognos upgrade, including all infrastructure, software, and configuration components.
  • Design and document the upgrade process, architecture, and system configuration.
  • Install and configure Cognos software in all relevant environments (e.g., Development, QA, Production).
  • Manage Cognos services and servers (dispatcher, gateway, report server) for optimized performance and reliability.
  • Apply enterprise IT service management practices, including scheduling and executing system change requests.
  • Provide Tier III support during the upgrade process and post-upgrade stabilization period (warranty).
  • Escalate issues to IBM or other third parties as required and track resolutions.
  • Install and configure application components, including report rendering, visualization tools, and security model settings.
  • Migrate content from the legacy environment, including reports, dashboards, and visualizations; data source connections; security groups and permissions.
  • Validate migrated content to ensure consistency and functionality between versions.
  • Identify and address issues with report rendering or data connectivity post-upgrade.
  • Provide guidance to internal resources on updated application management and support procedures.
  • Collaborate with internal MBLL project management to provide upgrade and migration project plan and schedule.
  • Pre- and post-upgrade environment configuration documentation.
  • Test and validation reports comparing legacy and upgraded platforms.
  • Backup and recovery procedure documentation.
  • Knowledge transfer and support documentation for internal administrators.
  • A final summary report outlining completed work, issues encountered, and resolutions.
What you must have:
  • Successfully performed and completed at least 3 full upgrades of an existing Cognos application on premises from Cognos 11.1.x to 11.2.x or latest stable version.
  • Minimum 3 years technical expertise in IBM Cognos software.
  • Expertise in Cognos architecture, installation, configuration, and maintenance, including experience with Cognos Analytics.
  • Completion of a recognized degree or diploma program in an IT related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in Cognos Administration and support.
  • Expert knowledge of Cognos software, server, integration principles and design.
  • Proven project coordination experience.
  • Ability to adapt to change in dynamically evolving situations.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
Additional Requirements:
  • Must have Windows based computer with standard Windows applications.
  • Computer must be configured for MS Teams meetings and capable of connecting to MBLL’s Microsoft environment and applications such as SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive.
  • Must have licenses for all software products required to perform the above responsibilities.
  • Must possess own communication device.
  • All applicants must clear a background check.
  • A Canadian based federal security clearance is considered an asset.
