Position Overview
This position works with the medical team to provide optimal medical nutrition therapy to all patients, including infants, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics. It involves collaborating with other department members to improve food service and quality care.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
- Registration with the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.
- Licensure through the West Virginia Board of Licensed Dietitians, or applicable state licensure.
- State criminal background check, and federal check if applicable, as required by the state department of health.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience: One year of clinical experience.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
The following are the general responsibilities of the role. Other duties may be assigned as needed:
- Provide comprehensive high-quality medical nutrition therapy to patients.
- Complete physician-ordered consults and document in medical records, communicating with physicians as needed.
- Document NPO/Clear Liquid notes by day five and follow-up until nutrition is provided.
- Accurately complete and document calorie counts, and summarize results within 24 hours if relevant.
- Calculate and report nitrogen balance and metabolic cart study results promptly.
- Conduct nutrition assessments on high-risk patients, including evaluating diet appropriateness, laboratory values, drug-nutrient interactions, and developing care plans.
- Utilize order writing privileges within scope of practice, with physician co-signature, for the 'MNT Protocol'.
- Maintain current registration, licensure, and clinical competency, verified annually.
- Follow up on assessments and consults, documenting appropriately.
- Participate in meetings, conferences, and educational activities relevant to the role.
- Supervise and guide nutritional therapy support team activities, ensuring safety and accuracy.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other staff to optimize nutrition care, including managing diet textures and medication timing.
- Address patient food complaints and coordinate with food services for resolutions.
- Develop and update clinical rotation assignments and educational sessions for interns and staff.
- Monitor interns' performance, review documentation, and evaluate progress.
- Create and deliver in-service training and community lectures as requested.
