Overview

The current vacancy is in the Shasta County Sheriff’s Department. The oral exam is tentatively scheduled for October 2025. Responses to supplemental questions are required. Final filing date: October 15, 2025, at 5:00 PM. Salary information: $7,261 - $9,267 approximate monthly / $41.89 - $53.46 approximate hourly.

About the Department

The Sheriff’s Office is organized into five major divisions: Custody, Services, Enforcement, Investigations, and Coroner. The divisions include:

  • Custody: County Jail and Annex Work Facility; provides basic medical care for inmates in custody.
  • Services: Local Office of Emergency Services, Personnel and Hiring, Background Unit, Internal Affairs, Records Unit.
  • Enforcement: Patrol activities and municipal law enforcement for the City of Shasta Lake; Animal Regulation Unit.
  • Investigations: Major Crimes Unit, Crime Lab, SINTF, MET, AB109 Compliance Team; handles major and ancillary investigations, including drug, probation, and parole offenses.
  • Coroner’s Division: Investigates sudden, violent, or unusual deaths; commanded by a Lieutenant.
About the Position

Under limited direction, to manage and oversee complex administrative, fiscal, and operational functions of a department; may supervise and train staff; and to perform related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Senior management class; reports to department head; significant responsibility for departmental fiscal/budget matters and administrative functions; may supervise staff. All duties are performed with a high level of independence. This is an unclassified, at‑will position.

Responsibilities (illustrative)
  • Provide oversight and supervision of the department’s administrative, operational, and fiscal activities, including contracts and general business activities.
  • Prepare or oversee county budget submissions and related reporting for State and Federal agencies; develop and implement fiscal policies and procedures; monitor financial forecasting and auditing; ensure compliance with governmental accounting standards.
  • Coordinate processing of invoices and payments; monitor grant funding; supervise fiscal, administrative, professional, clerical, and technical staff.
  • Advise on strategic goals, organizational policies, and personnel procedures; prepare staff reports and contractual documents (contracts/MOU) with other agencies; manage purchasing, leases, and data systems.
  • Represent the department at meetings and with community partners; act for the department head as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in business or public administration, accounting, finance, economics, or closely related field AND
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience performing administrative, accounting, auditing, budget management, or program analysis duties which include supervisory or management experience in a governmental setting.

Knowledge of department operations and management information systems is desirable. Managerial/supervisory experience in another county department or related organization may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for formal education.

Special Requirements
