Location: Powell River/qathet Regional District

Schedule: Thurs Friday Saturday Sunday (up to 2 days a week), including weekends/holidays 6AM to 7PM in PDT; 7AM to 7PM PST

Salary Or Wage: $22/hour (annual increases tied to CPI)

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to analyze weather conditions accurately
  • Effective communication skills to convey weather information to relevant parties clearly and promptly
  • Ability to work independently and adhere to regulatory standards in a remote or on-site environment
  • Certified Weather Observer credentials or equivalent certification
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts, including weekends and holidays
  • Prior experience in a similar field

Full training is provided by Nav Canada in Cornwall, Ontario. Full expenses are covered, including airfare and accommodation. You must be available for a course starting in January or February of next year. TBD.

List of Duties
  • This is a part-time Certified Weather Observer role located on-site in Powell River, BC.
  • The responsibilities include monitoring and recording real‑time weather conditions, preparing and disseminating accurate weather reports, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Additional tasks may involve troubleshooting weather observation equipment and coordinating with relevant authorities.
  • Open and operate the airport weather station on assigned work days.
  • Create and transmit Meteorological Reports (METARS) and Specials (SPECI) at assigned times and according to defined criteria

All training provided by Nav Canada in Cornwall Ontario for a period of 41/2 weeks. A small honorarium will be included for miscellaneous costs. You must successfully complete this training to earn a permanent job in Powell River. Pass mark is 70%.

  • You must be a self starter and able to work without direct supervision.
  • Your METARS & SPECI are vital to aviation safety.
  • A high standard is necessary and demanded.
  • A 3 month probationary period follows course completion, a successful check out on station and continuous monitoring.

About the Role:

  • We’re looking for a reliable, detail‑oriented person to join our small weather station team in Powell River as a Certified Weather Observer. This is a hands‑on, outdoor position ideal for someone who enjoys working independently and has an interest in weather or aviation. You’ll collect and report local weather data for Nav Canada — helping ensure accurate forecasts and aviation safety.

What You’ll Do:

  • Observe and record weather conditions (temperature, wind, cloud, visibility, precipitation, etc.)
  • Prepare and transmit METAR and SPECI reports
  • Verify automated instrument readings and maintain observation logs
  • Communicate with meteorological and aviation personnel when needed
  • Work safely and responsibly in all types of weather
