Overview

The General Manager (GM) is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Port Alberni Friendship Center in collaboration with the Executive Director, ensuring that all organization functions operate smoothly and efficiently. The GM will implement strategies to improve productivity, increase efficiency, and enhance participant satisfaction, while also ensuring compliance with organization policies and regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Leadership & Management: In collaboration with the Executive Director, the GM will lead and manage all departments within the organization, including operations, finance, marketing, and human resources. Foster a positive work environment that encourages teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication. The GM will work closely with the ED and share information regarding departmental needs, employee feedback, and organizational challenges. The ED & GM will hold regular meetings to discuss organizational performance and address challenges collaboratively.
  • Strategic Planning: In collaboration with the ED & Board of Directors, develop and implement Board strategies to achieve organizational goals and objectives. Analyze program needs and gaps to identify opportunities for growth and expansion. Ensure resources are allocated effectively to meet operational needs and strategic goals.
  • Financial Oversight: In collaboration with the Executive Director & Finance Team, prepare and manage the annual budget, and implement processes to improve productivity and reduce costs.
  • Stakeholder Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with users, partner organizations, and First Nations. Ensure high levels of client satisfaction through effective service and support.
  • Staff Management: In collaboration with HR Team, recruit, train, and mentor staff; conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback to employees.
  • Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements; identify and mitigate potential risks.
  • Reporting and Analysis: In collaboration with Department Team Leads & Finance, prepare regular reports detailing operational performance, financial status, and strategic initiatives; ensure funding reports are completed and submitted as per agreements; review contracts and ensure requirements are met in each department.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, management, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in a managerial role, preferably within a not-for-profit Indigenous organization.
