Job description

Under the general direction of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, the Building Systems Operation Technician will oversee the daily operation, monitoring, and basic maintenance of our central plant equipment. This includes our ventilation (HVAC), boiler, compressors, and chiller systems. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver dedicated to safety and efficiency.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operate, monitor, and adjust building automation systems (BAS) or direct digital control (DDC) systems to maintain optimal environmental conditions.
  • Perform daily rounds to inspect, log readings, and ensure the proper functioning of:
  • Boiler systems (both low and high-pressure)
  • Air handling units (AHUs), fans, and ventilation equipment
  • Equipment associated with water treatment system
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks, including filter changes, and basic cleaning of equipment.
  • Identify and troubleshoot operational issues, performing minor repairs within scope of certification and experience.
  • Respond promptly to alarms and system failures, taking corrective action to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain accurate logs of operations, maintenance activities, and chemical treatment levels.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, and environmental regulations.
  • Coordinate with and support senior mechanics and outside contractors for major repairs and projects.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Education and Training
  • Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) or Direct Digital Controls (DDC).
  • 4th Class Stationary Engineer or HVAC Certification or Electrical certification.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical schematics.
  • Strong understanding of safety principles, including LOTO procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills and a team-oriented mindset.
Experience
  • Experience in HVAC control systems, facilities management systems, and servicing technique. Peripheral equipment installation considered an asset.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in building control systems, building maintenance and mechanical systems, including exposure to troubleshooting and repairing BAS Systems. A combination of related education, training, apprenticeships, and work experience would also be considered.
Personal Stability
  • Must have the physical ability to work in various conditions both indoors and outdoors; perform medium to heavy work such as lifting and carrying objects and/or equipment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Able and willing to work with other trades within the crew and pass on knowledge to allow them to perform simple tasks.
Other
  • Bilingualism (French and English) would be considered an asset.
  • Combination of trade tickets is a definite asset.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Starting salary of $34.78/hour; $67,821.00/year (As per Step 1 of the STW collective agreement).

Option to enroll in Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan.
