Job summary

A regional health provider in Oshawa, Ontario is seeking an Assistant Chef to prepare and organize meals for long term care residents. Ideal candidates will have a Culinary Management Diploma or equivalent, a valid Food Handler Certificate, and 2 years of cooking experience. This position is located at Hillsdale Estates in Oshawa, Ontario.

The incumbent will:
  • Assemble, prepare and organize safe, nutritious and palatable food in accordance with established standards for long term care residents and outreach clients
  • Follow established menus, recipes and production sheets to organize, plan and coordinate food requirements for daily meals for service areas
  • Provide instructions, delegate assignments and communicate with food service staff in regard to production requirements, panning and ingredient control
  • Organize and properly rotate food items in fridges and freezers
  • Maintain a safe work environment by cleaning and sanitizing counters, equipment and utensils according to established procedures
  • Prepare meals for special events and functions as required
The successful applicant will possess:
  • Completion of an approved Culinary Management Diploma or a Journeyman's Cook's Certification or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A valid/approved Food Handler Certificate obtained within the past 5 years
  • Minimum 2 years recent quantity cooking experience, preferably in a long term care setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and compliance with relevant legislation, standards and best practices in areas of food preparation, safe food handling, workplace safety and long term care
  • Working knowledge of computer applications (Word, Excel)
  • Good communication and interpersonal skill, with the ability to follow both oral and written instructions
  • Demonstrated customer service and problem-solving abilities
  • Willingness to acknowledge and learn from mistakes in service delivery.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to multi-task
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision, as well as in a team environment
  • Physical ability to perform the essential duties of the position
Assistant Chef Salary Information

The hourly rate range for this position is $30.05 to $31.15.

Conditions of Employment

The successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check dated within two (2) months from date of hire. Additionally, tuberculosis screening will be required in accordance with the FLTC Act (O.Reg. 246/22). Proof of education, qualifications and any other job bona fide requirements will also be collected. Finally, compliance with the Mask Fit Testing Program is required and will be coordinated as part of the orientation process.
