Job description
Main Purpose & Function

The Electrical Apprentice performs manual and semi-skilled tasks of moderate difficulty in the Electrical trade. Tasks of increasing complexity are assigned to the Apprentice as they progress successfully through the apprenticeship program and accordingly, independent judgment is also permitted. An employee of this class is required to attend regular courses in Electrical trade training and related subjects as may be prescribed by the Director of Apprenticeship and Industrial Training.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

This is semi-skilled and skilled work of considerable variety under the journeyperson level of responsibility but requiring involvement in all phases of the journeyperson's work. Detailed assignments and instructions both oral and written are received from a superior who checks the work during progress and upon completion for good workmanship, the attainment of desired objectives and conformance with established standards. The apprentice also assists in performing the illustrative examples of work identified by the Journeyperson Electrician class specifications, which have provisions for an apprenticeship program. The apprentice is required to perform the journeyperson's illustrative examples of work for the trade at the journeyperson level in various stages of his apprenticeship.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by pre-apprentice training related to the work and some applicable experience
  • Completion of a recognized pre-apprenticeship training course in the trade of electricians will be considered an asset.
  • The successful candidate is required to have some knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment used in the Electrical trade.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of the hazards and proper safety aspects of the trade.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good attendance is of operational importance.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, vehicles, and heavy equipment related to the electricians trade.
  • Ability to master the manual skill and technical knowledge involved in the Electrician trade.
Drivers License and Record Checks
  • A current and valid BC Driver’s License and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record is required
    • 5 years accumulation of no more than 9 points, not in excess of 3 points per single year
    • 3 years accumulation of no more than 1 preventable work related driving or equipment operating accident in any single year
    • Employees who do not demonstrate a satisfactory driving record will have their application reviewed in more detail

Candidates must attach the following records and satisfy the City’s driving requirements to be considered for this role:

  • Copy of your five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 14 days of this posting
  • Copy of your five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 14 days of this posting
  • If you have less than five years driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/country abstract and claims history
