Main duties of the job

As an Advanced Nurse Practitioner at Whitby UTC, you will be the cornerstone of our service, providing vital autonomous care. Your core duties will include:

  • Conducting comprehensive assessments, diagnosing, and managing a diverse caseload of patients with minor injuries and illnesses.
  • Utilising your independent prescribing skills to treat conditions effectively and efficiently.
  • Performing a range of clinical procedures such as wound closure, incision and drainage, and applying plasters or splints.
  • Leading on the request and interpretation of diagnostic tests, including X-rays and bloods.
  • Making critical decisions on patient pathways, from discharge with safety-netting advice to referral to specialist services.
  • This role offers the challenge and autonomy to fully utilise your advanced practice skills in a dynamic, unscheduled care environment.

Job responsibilities

To function as an autonomous Advanced Nurse Practitioner within the Whitby Urgent Treatment Centre, providing a high standard of clinical care to patients presenting with undiagnosed and undifferentiated conditions. The post-holder will demonstrate expert clinical assessment, diagnostic, and treatment skills, including independent prescribing, to manage the complete episode of care for patients with minor illnesses and injuries.

2. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Practice:

  • To autonomously assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate treatment/interventions and care for patients in an unscheduled care setting.
  • Clinically examine and assess patient needs from a physiological, psychological, and social perspective.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as pathology, X-rays, and ECGs, and make diagnoses based on the findings.
  • Perform a range of clinical procedures including, but not limited to, wound closure (suturing/gluing), incision and drainage of abscesses, and application of plaster casts/splints.
  • Utilise independent non-medical prescribing skills to prescribe safe, effective, and appropriate medication as per the formulary.
  • Make clear, professionally autonomous decisions regarding patient management, including discharge or referral to other specialities as appropriate.
  • Provide expert health advice and education to patients and their carers.
Professional and Leadership:
  • To act as a role model, demonstrating high standards of care and providing professional leadership to the nursing and wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical protocols and standards to enhance patient care.
  • Participate in clinical supervision and mentorship for junior staff and students (Band 8a focus).
  • Take responsibility for managing one\'s own workload and patient caseload within the UTC.
Working environment

The role is based in a busy Urgent Treatment Centre, requiring the management of a varied and unpredictable caseload. The post-holder will work 12-hour "Long Day" shifts (08:00-20:00) as per the published roster
