Independent contributor recognized as a Risk Control expert aligned with the Engineered Property line of business. A team player contributing to the success of the Engineered Property’s three segment verticals, Energy, Real Estate & Complex Property, through the delivery of risk control services. Works independently and within a team environment requiring specialist technical complexity and coordination.

Provides risk control expertise for high hazard complex risks by assessing risk and conveying the exposures and loss estimates to the underwriting team. Operates as the Risk Control single point of contact for Engineered Property on assigned accounts.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

  • Works with the Engineered Property team to conduct, review and/or direct the evaluation and assessment of high hazard complex risks. Applies Risk Control policies, guidelines, insurance laws and regulations, and drives the resolution of critical risk control matters.
  • As a technical specialist, provides risk control perspective across an entire account portfolio. Utilizes corporate and location level details to build a broad account level view of exposures and controls.
  • Perform physical risk surveys producing comprehensive risk assessment written reports complete with loss scenario estimates.
  • Produces account level desktop risk reports, utilizing internal and external reports, publicly available information, and data evaluation tools, complete with loss scenario estimates.
  • Collaborates with the line of business to develop portfolio & account strategies to positively impact loss ratios, new business goals and retention of accounts.
  • Develops and maintains business relationships with both internal and external business partners, actively improving CNA’s brand in the Canadian market.
  • Supports the line of business with technical expertise to ensure ongoing organizational learning, development, and advancement of the team’s skills & knowledge.
  • Liaise effectively with Claims, providing technical guidance and loss mitigation strategies.
  • Work effectively with an established Underwriting team in a fast-paced environment.
  • May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
  • Senior level technical and business management acumen, and knowledge of insurance, risk management principles, practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated success as a risk control professional managing large, high hazard complex, and high profile accounts.
  • In depth property risk assessment expertise including knowledge of fire protection and detection systems including applicable codes and standards, as well as demonstrated competency in fire behavior/fire science and plan review.
  • Ability to assess natural hazard risk such as earth movement, convective storm, coastal wind & flood and develop & communicate appropriate mitigation strategies for account exposed locations.
  • Ability to assess human element programs and building construction classifications. Knowledge of loss expectancy methodologies across various perils a plus.
  • Knowledge of hazards associated with occupancies in various segments including power generation & utilities, renewable energy, mining, pulp and paper, industrial and commercial occupancies.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, decision making and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of internal and external business partners.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to prioritize and simultaneously manage multiple projects and external business partners.
  • Resourceful in resolving unique and challenging business situations.
  • Ability to achieve results, at the portfolio level, by taking a proactive long-term view of business unit goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
  • The position requires travel with potential overnight stay to both urban & remote areas.
  • Proficient time management skills and ability to prioritize various tasks.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science discipline preferred; Masters and/or professional engineering license considered an asset.
  • Professional designation(s) including P.Eng, CFPS, FE/EIT, CRM preferred.
  • A minimum of 5-8 years of experience years of risk control experience.
