The Faculty of Health Disciplines (FHD) offers innovative and accessible programs and courses in both undergraduate and graduate studies, including the thesis research opportunities for graduate learners.

FHD actively promotes research excellence and is home to two Canada Research Chairs in Regulation, Social Governance, and Inequities in Health as well as in Resurgent Methodologies for Indigenous Health. Faculty members are engaged in programs of research in a variety of health-related areas. Faculty members' research is funded nationally, including CFI, CIHR, and SSHRC, as well as through regional and provincial organizations.

The Position:

The Academic Student Advisor, Graduate Programs will assume responsibility for assisting students with academic program planning and the selection of appropriate courses for graduate programs with the Faculty of Health Disciplines. The incumbent will ensure that all student queries are dealt with in a timely and professional manner. They will assist students and prospective students with the interpretation of institutional requirements, policies, and regulations; interpret student profiles; assist students with drafting a program plan; maintain appropriate records; assists with complex administrative functions and processes within the Faculty of Health Disciplines; and support students with documentation requests, as appropriate.

Qualifications:
  • An undergraduate degree and a minimum of 2 years of direct student advising work experience in a post-secondary educational environment is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of Athabasca University policies and procedures is a must.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills are essential while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Must have the ability to think clearly and logically while problem-solving for solutions on the fly.
  • Excellent demonstrated knowledge of student information systems such as Ellucian SRM, Greymatter, Brightspace, Amazon Connect, and Microsoft Office suite, is required. Ability and willingness to learn to use additional applications and software as needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.
  • The ability to be patient, understanding, and helpful, given the high degree of front-line contact with students and other clients, is a must. Working with a team of service providers and providing student services excellence is a critical component of this position.
  • Demonstrated use of written and oral communication skills, including but not limited to listening, problem solving, conflict resolution, and investigative skills, is essential.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to recognize the need for keeping others informed, as required.
  • The ability to manage several activities at once, set priorities, work effectively under pressure, and maintain accuracy, along with meeting strict deadlines.
