Job summary

What’s the Role?

As an Education Support Teacher (EST) – BLV, you will contribute to the development and delivery of responsive educational programs. You will work closely with educational teams, families, and community partners to support individualized success for learners.

Your Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities
  • Provide tier 1, 2, and 3 support to educational teams, families, and community of care partners for learners who are BLV and eligible for APSEA services.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, other educational team members, and families to implement inclusive, responsive, and flexible instructional practices for BLV learners.
  • Offer support to families to enhance child development and independence, encouraging participation in program development and delivery.
  • Maintain knowledge of assessment tools to support comprehensive assessment processes.
  • Assess, recommend, and provide access technology, adapted and alternate format materials for active participation and self‑determination.
  • Support processes that create a safe, equitable, positive learning environment valuing diversities.
What You Bring to the Table

We are looking for someone who is passionate about education and brings the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in education of learners who are blind or visually impaired, or equivalent.
  • Valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certificate.
  • Competency to support the Expanded Core Curriculum – BLV.
  • Experience working with children and youth who are BLV, including those with multiple exceptionalities.
  • Experience or training with children from infancy to late adolescence.
  • Experience with assessment, program planning, and instruction delivery for BLV learners with additional exceptionalities.
  • Teaching experience in diverse settings (school, home, virtual, early learning centres, community).
  • Knowledge of the Unified English Braille (UEB) code and ability to design tactile graphics.
  • Ability to assess, develop, write, implement, and evaluate individualized programs.
  • Comfortable with technology to ensure learners have access to learning opportunities.
  • Collaborative and positive relationships with children, families, staff, administrators, and community partners.
  • Confidentiality and professionalism regarding student information.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and English communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Culturally responsive understanding of cross‑cultural awareness, human rights, and diversity.
  • Reliable transportation; may require overnight stays and regular travel.
Would Be a Plus If You Have
  • Experience and/or training in early childhood education.
  • American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency.
  • French language skills.
