Job Purpose

The Autonomous Haulage System (AHS) is a comprehensive fleet management system for mines. The autonomous trucks are centrally controlled through a wireless network that integrates on-board vehicle controllers, high precision global positioning, and obstacle avoidance systems. The AHS Product Development team is responsible for building innovative solutions to unique and challenging autonomous operation problems. Working with our partners around the world, you will help design and support the next generation of mine optimization technologies and build the future platforms that will drive the changes in the mining industry for generations.

As a Software Engineer II – AHS, you will work with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and maintain software components supporting the world’s leading autonomous haulage platform. You’ll collaborate with senior engineers and technical leads to deliver high-quality code, ensure robust system performance, and continuously improve our development practices.

This is a hands‑on, mid‑level engineering role ideal for someone looking to deepen their technical expertise, contribute to impactful projects, and grow toward senior‑level technical ownership.

Key job responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software services that support AHS functionality, such as equipment management, route optimization, and machine coordination.
  • Collaborate closely with product management and senior engineers to understand customer and product requirements, contributing to solution design and technical planning.
  • Implement well‑structured, maintainable, and efficient code following established design patterns and software engineering best practices.
  • Participate in peer code reviews, testing, and continuous integration processes to ensure high software quality.
  • Write and maintain clear technical documentation and contribute to team knowledge sharing.
  • Apply secure coding practices and data handling standards across all development activities.
  • Participate in system monitoring and incident response, ensuring operational excellence and reliability.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives, tooling enhancements, and automation efforts.
  • Occasionally travel internationally to collaborate with global Komatsu teams and partners.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of professional software development experience in an object‑oriented programming language (Java preferred).
  • Experience developing and delivering production‑quality software systems.
  • Familiarity with microservices, APIs, or distributed systems architecture.
  • Understanding of software design principles, data structures, and algorithmic efficiency.
  • Experience with source control systems (e.g., Git) and CI/CD tools.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills in cross‑functional team environments.
  • Advanced English (written and verbal) for global team collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing software for large‑scale or mission‑critical systems.
  • Exposure to event‑driven architectures, RESTful API design, and asynchronous communication patterns.
  • Familiarity with containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud services.
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks and quality assurance practices.
  • Understanding of observability principles and system performance monitoring.
  • Interest or experience in robotics, autonomous systems, or industrial control software.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, learn new technologies, and contribute to technical discussions.
