Engineering Manager, MAAS – Canonical

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems.

Our Ubuntu platform is widely used in enterprises for cloud, AI, engineering, and IoT.

We are expanding the MAAS (Metal as a Service) team and seeking an experienced engineering manager to lead high-quality software development in a distributed environment.

Location: Work-from-anywhere, available in EMEA or the Americas.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a distributed team of engineers organized by time zone (Americas, EMEA, etc.).
  • Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and career planning.
  • Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
  • Advocate and advance modern software development practices.
  • Participate in the engineering process via code and architectural review.
  • Engage with broader teams at Canonical, the open source community, and partners.
  • Travel to internal and external global events 4–6 weeks per year.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science.
  • Exceptional academic track record.
  • Proven experience delivering software using Python, Golang, or similar languages.
  • Experience with Linux system administration (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Familiarity with modern Linux cloud technologies: networking, storage, containers, and Kubernetes.
  • Strong technical aptitude for distributed systems.
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
  • Experience with agile software development methodologies.
  • Ability to mentor, develop, and support team members.
  • Result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks.
Nice-to-have skills
  • Experience with Typescript and modern web frameworks (React, Angular, Svelte, Vue).
  • Data center infrastructure management and design.
