Reporting to the Executive Director, the purpose of this position is to provide direct support pertaining to all Center for Journalism & Democracy (CJD) business and fiscal matters and to provide overall financial administration of requisitions, invoices, grants, and contracts housed in the Center. This position will help the Center fulfill its mission: To bolster the field of journalism in service of our multiracial democracy by supporting the teaching and practice of historically informed investigative reporting at Howard University and across the constellation of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The Center provides academic and financial support to students, faculty and news organizations located at Howard University and the nation’s largest journalism programs located at HBCUs.
SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:
Involves no responsibility or authority for the direction of others, except for interns and student employees.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Internal contacts include executives, administrators, faculty, students, and staff of the university at large. External contacts include alumni, consultants, representatives from other colleges and universities, visitors, and the general public.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Manages grant spending and tracking for the CJD’s multi-million dollar grant portfolio
- Works closely with the Center’s director and grants manager to supervise the development and monitoring of grant proposal budgets and grant reports, ensuring alignment with the University advancement team and relevant grant accounting offices.
- Responsible for CJD’s operating budget and assists the Center’s director, as well as all division heads and program with budgetary matters and decisions.
- Responsible for developing financial and operational procedures for the orderly coordination and processing of financial and human resource matters.
- Performs evaluative analyses of CJD’s administrative effectiveness and presents recommendations for improving efficiency and effectiveness.
- Formal responsibility for the management of budgets, development of policy, and the implementation of administrative organizational procedures.
- Maintains, reviews, and reconciles Workday reports for the Center’s director.
- Recommends budgetary procedures and formulates the annual budget for the department.
- Coordinates and assists the Center’s personnel with budget activity, proper expenditures coding, document preparation, and other accounting-related activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s Degree in business or related area with 6-8 years in accounting functions with at least 6 years in analytical budgetary accounting work experience.
- 12 years of related work experience may be substituted in lieu of educational qualifications.

Expected Pay Range: $113,000 - $123,000
