Job summary

A major oil and gas company in the United Arab Emirates is seeking an experienced electrical engineer to supervise and participate in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment on assigned rigs. The ideal candidate should hold a B.Sc. in Engineering (preferably Petroleum or Mechanical) and have at least 8 years of experience in high voltage industrial electrical work. Job description
JOB PURPOSE:

Supervise and participate in the installation, repair and maintenance of all electrical equipment and related electrical elements of mechanical equipment located on assigned rig, covering AC distribution, power and lighting systems, DC electric drive systems, control boards, switch‑gear assembly, S.C.R/VFD equipment, drilling instrument and control. Implement and follow up on preventive maintenance program and effect breakdown repairs as required.

Job Specific Accountabilities:
  • Supervises assigned Company and contract personnel engaged in electrical maintenance and repair work on assigned rig. Allocates jobs to subordinates in accordance with their skills and checks work upon completion. Such jobs range from domestic type (installation of washing machines) to industrial (Silicon control Rectifiers/Variable Frequency Drives, installation to convert AC to DC). Performs supervisory functions at the level established by management for the position.
  • Responds to and investigates breakdowns, delegates work where possible or performs more complex work personally. Diagnoses faults by testing, isolating equipment, stripping down to replace or repair faulty parts, reassembling, testing and re‑commissioning where appropriate. Such work is frequently undertaken with other technicians and necessitates the use of pullers, bearing press, in addition to the use of normal hand tools. Effects temporary repairs to maintain drilling activity.
  • Follows up on preventive maintenance schedules to ensure adequate performance of equipment by reviewing manufacturers’ manuals, using experience and referring to previous performance of similar equipment. Ensures that schedule is adhered to and maintains records accordingly.
  • Participates in the installation of new equipment to ensure provision of adequate power to required location, plans routing of cables and maintains drawings of such modifications to ensure continuity. This includes installations of such items as telecommunications, photocopier and gas, fire and safety devices.
  • Assesses repairs required to components and determines when such repairs can be undertaken on board or alternatively where full workshop facilities are necessary. Utilises components from other equipment when necessary to facilitate repair and recommends scrapping items out where appropriate.
  • Participates in rig move activities by checking electrical items as per rig move preparation list. Work includes disconnecting and nippling down electrical equipment and cables and later reconnecting all such equipment on completion of the move. Maintains records of running hours and operations for all DC power items. Liaises with Manager (Rig) to shut off main power, whenever required.
  • Liaises with Manager (Rig), Mechanic (Rig), and Driller when shutting down of equipment is necessary, for safety reasons. Promotes an awareness of electrical safety at all times and obtains necessary electrical work permits.
  • Checks all systems on a regular basis including emergency lighting system, emergency electrical equipment, limit switches on cranes (to control angle of crane) and submits reports on such checks together with details of other works undertaken.
  • Carries out other similar or related duties such as assisting and establishing and monitoring material budget, checking and maintaining all rig instrumentation systems, checking and maintaining water well pumps and generator, maintaining log book on all electrical works carried out during shift, observing good housekeeping and participating in safety meetings to advise on risks associated with electrical hazards and secures work permits necessary for electrical works.
  • Responsible for electrical equipment.
  • Comply with all UAE, ADNOC, ADNOC Drilling and client Asset Integrity Management codes of practice.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Minimum Qualification:

  • B.Sc. in Engineering discipline preferably Petroleum or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

Minimum Experience & Knowledge & Skills:

  • 8 years' experience in maintenance and repair of industrial electrical equipment (high voltage) AC/DC.
  • Good knowledge of spoken and written English.
  • Computer literate.
