Job Description

Position Overview:

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurses provide critical care to premature and sick newborns. In addition to providing around-the-clock care to these patients, NICU RNs offer support to the parents. This parental support can range from emotional encouragement to advising parents on how to take care of an infant when they return home. NICU RNs work as a team member with other nurse practitioners and physicians. Their primary responsibility is to ensure that a newborn's critical care treatment is secure.

Responsibilities

Key Accountabilities:

  • Providing round-the-clock care to premature, feeding and growing babies, attending to their basic needs such as monitoring vital signs, feeding, administration of oral supplements, hygiene, kangaroo care etc.
  • Performing procedures such as inserting intravenous lines, blood extraction via venepuncture and capillary heel prick for laboratory tests.
  • Performing procedures such as inserting nasogastric and orogastric tubes, gastric wash, colostomy care and changing of colostomy bags.
  • Performing arterial line blood sampling and calibration of arterial lines.
  • Handling of central lines such as umbilical lines and long lines with proper aseptic techniques
  • To review the medications ordered by physician for appropriateness, preparation of medication under aseptic technique and administration of medications.
  • Assisting the NICU physicians in medical procedures and treatments such as central line insertion, intubation and lumbar puncture
  • Using specialized medical equipment such as ventilator, nitric oxide machine, cerebral function monitor, therapeutic cooling machine etc.
  • Formulating nursing plans and evaluating the effectiveness of treatments.
  • Comforting anxious parents and providing explanation about plan of care and patient condition. To ensure that all patients parents are updated regularly with accurate information and presented in a sensitive way and one that they understand
  • Offering support to parents and family members and educating them on the at-home care of their newborn. Supporting parents during breast feeding and bottle feeding
  • Delivers a high standard of evidence-based care to patients at KCH.
  • Adhere to the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) guidelines.
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate the needs of patients on an ongoing basis.
  • To uphold high standards of care in NICU department of KCH.
Qualifications

Education & Qualification

  • UAE Medical Health Authority License (DHA).
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing or Degree in Nursing (minimum two years course duration) And Registration as a Registered Nurse from Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia

Experience

  • Has worked in hospital or similar setting for at least 2 years

  • Demonstrable ongoing and active CPD
