Job Summary
The NICU Nurse provides specialized, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to critically ill and premature newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The role involves continuous assessment, monitoring, and management of neonates requiring advanced life support and specialized interventions. The NICU Nurse collaborates closely with neonatologists, pediatricians, and multidisciplinary teams, while supporting and educating parents to ensure safe, family-centered care in accordance with regulatory standards and hospital policies.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate competency in newborn assessment and plans nursing care accordingly.
- Demonstrate competency in stabilization of the newborn by placing the infant on continuous hemodynamic monitoring, maintain thermoregulation and performing capillary blood glucose monitoring.
- Demonstrate competency in assisting bedside procedure like intubation, extubating nasogastric / orogastric tube insertion, umbilical vein / umbilical arterial line insertion and long line insertion.
- Demonstrate competency in caring newborn with respiratory support like CPAP, Optiflow and Lowflow.
- Demonstrate competency in giving feeding through nasogastric / orogastric tube.
- Demonstrate competency in caring for newborn who are on phototherapy.
- Demonstrate competency in newborn care like cord care and eye care.
- Assist with transfer of newborn within the healthcare facilities and serves as transport nurse during ambulance transfer.
- Responsible for maintaining and operating the equipment’s such as ventilators, cardiac monitors, ABG machine, and baby’s warmer.
- Provides direct care and related duties in neonatal critical care and maintains current knowledge of neonatal critical nursing care practices and standards.
- Plans, implements and evaluates nursing care for assigned neonates in an effective and organized manner.
- Assist in breast feeding and provides health teaching to the mother.
- Demonstrate competency in providing physical, respiratory and physiological / comfort needs of the neonates.
- Demonstrate competency in emergency situation including neonatal resuscitation.
- Responsible for monitoring the changes in health condition through (newborn early warning sign chart).
- Identifies environmental and behavioral risk factors which may compromise newborn safety.
- Responsible for emergency cart checking and appropriate use of equipment and supplies.
- Competence in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Advanced Life Support and participates as a member of Code Blue team hospital wide.
- Plans, implements and evaluates care given to assigned patient in an effective and Organized manner.
- Predominant role in medication preparation, administration, documentation and monitoring of patients for any adverse reactions.
- Demonstrate competencies in intravenous cannulation and intravenous fluid administration, blood transfusion and blood collection.
- Performs competency in high alert medications, storage and administration as per the policy.
- Coordinate with the concerned departments during vaccine indent.
- Receiving, storage and administration of vaccine as mentioned in the safe vaccine handling and cold chain maintenance policy.
- Meets or exceeds all continuing education requirements for maintaining licensure to practice nursing in accordance with regulatory standards.
- Responsible for the supervision of practical nurses and collaborate with multidisciplinary team as required.
- Perform the task assigned by the head nurse / shift in charge and reports adverse events to head nurse / nursing supervisor.
- Demonstrate competency in prioritizing in health education and maintaining patient’s record.
- Follows the reporting mechanisms / chain of command in the nursing services department. All patient care issues shall be correctly and promptly reported.
- Provides for the physical, psychological and social needs of patient and their families.
- Performs a wide range of nursing procedures with attention to accuracy, patient safety and comfort, including those requiring strict aseptic technique
- Responsible for appropriate storage and maintaining inventory of medication including high alert medicate and Narcotic as per the hospital policy.
- Complies with established Departmental policies and procedures.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient’s record and ensure that patients’ rights and responsibilities are communicated appropriately and maintains patient’s safety and privacy.
- Takes responsibility for professional clinical practice and actively involved in continuing education provided by the Nursing Education Department.
- Act as a patient advocate and provide health education and support to patient and families.
Education & Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing/Diploma in Nursing.
- Current licensure in country of origin and with DOH licensed to practice Al Ain, UAE.
- Minimum 2 years nursing experience in NICU clinical area.
- BLS provider.
- Good English spoken & written, Arabic language advantageous/desirable, but not essential.
