JOB TITLE: Communication Associate GS6 (UNHRD)

JOB CONTRACT/GRADE: GS 6 Fixed-Term

REPORTING TO: Communication Officer P3 (Head of Communication UNHRD network)

Organisational Context

Global hunger has reached alarming levels in 2022 and WFP, the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2020, remains dedicated and committed to address this global food crisis. The United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) is a network of strategically located hubs established to support humanitarian organisations and the broader international community in responding to emergencies and crises. UNHRD provides essential services such as storage, easy access to critical supplies, and technical assistance.

Job Purpose

The Communication Associate will support the UNHRD Network strategy cell specifically the communications team by focusing on content creation, graphic design and providing support for communication activities, events, conferences and press releases. Additionally this role will aid in Information Management (IM) and reporting, ensuring that all communications are clear, impactful and align with the organization's objectives.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  1. Perform specialized communications processes and activities to support staff in the development, preparation, execution and dissemination of campaigns for target audiences.
  2. Conduct research, suggest ideas and provide coordination support to ensure the timely and effective delivery of video/film, photographic and radio projects. Manage the storage and distribution of audio/visual materials in accordance with relevant policies.
  3. Serve as an information focal point support and/or coordinate media coverage of events to optimize publicity of WFPs activities.
  4. Organise and execute special events working closely with colleagues, external partners and media to ensure events are effectively scheduled, publicised and attended.
  5. Monitor traditional and social media and report relevant information to senior staff to inform the development and/or evaluation of communications activities and strategies.
  6. Under guidance prepare content for use on traditional and social media platforms and networks and printed materials to enhance coverage and support of WFPs activities, ensuring consistency with corporate messages.
  7. Distribute and promote communications guidelines for WFP staff to refer to when creating content.
  8. Manage updates and further develop internal records and databases ensuring information is accurate, organised and available for others to access.
  9. Respond to specialized queries and requests for support using initiative and following standard processes to ensure timely and accurate resolution of all enquiries.
  10. Maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders in order to provide an aligned coherent service and to identify opportunities to collaborate/integrate processes and activities.
  11. Implement improvements to communications methods and practices to contribute to a better flow of information about WFPs work to the media and stakeholders.
SPECIFIC POST REQUIREMENTS (As required by the Hiring Manager)
  • Ensure all publications, reports, infographics, brochures, flyers are consistent in terms of branding and align with WFP corporate guidelines.
  • Maintain and further develop the graphic guidelines in line with WFP/UNHRDs mandate.
  • Develop design proposals for public information campaigns, conferences, events and meetings, such graphics for multimedia branding, signs, posters, brochures, reports and web graphics.
  • Design templates for digital platforms and new publications and products in cooperation with internal team in charge.
  • Improve and edit artwork, photos, charts and other graphics.
  • Capture and edit photographic and video material into usable clips. Produce short videos using online software.
  • Contribute to developing multimedia products for web and social networking platforms including video and photo projects illustrating UNHRD initiatives. While producing materials, sensitivity to UNHRD donor and partner relationships is required.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
  • Completion of secondary school education.
  • A post‑secondary certificate or degree in Communications, Journalism, Graphic Design, Public Relations or a related field is desirable.
  • Certification or diploma in graphic design, fine arts, marketing and advertising media would be an advantage. A first university degree in graphic design, fine arts, marketing and advertising media and communications or a related area is preferable.
Experience
  • At least 6 years of work experience in supporting communication activities and producing high‑quality content for various platforms.
  • Experience working in international organisations, NGOs or the humanitarian sector is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in the following design programmes and software: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat, Premiere Pro, MS Office, Canva and Wochit (or a similar video production tool).
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills (MS PowerPoint, MS Publisher, MS Word, MS Visio and Excel) are required.
  • Proven experience of graphic production from start to published/printed product with knowledge of offset and digital printing processes.
  • Expertise in designing and preparing both digital and print‑ready files.
Skills and Competencies
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Proficiency in multimedia content creation (videos, pictures, articles) and distribution channels.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced and multicultural environment.
Language
  • Proficiency in English (oral and written) is required; proficiency in Arabic is an asset.
