Role: Assistant Professor in Biomedical Science. Based at the University of Birmingham Dubai campus. Full time. Salary: Competitive. Grade: 8. Closing date: 21 May 2025. UK and International travel may be required for this role.

Department of Biomedical Sciences, School of Infection Inflammation and Immunology, College of Medicine and Health, University of Birmingham Dubai. Role Summary

As an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Science you will join a vibrant team of academic staff and contribute to the management, development and delivery of the BSc Biomedical Science and Foundation programme on our Dubai campus. Through teaching you will inspire students, be informed by discipline-based research, and contribute to leadership, management and administration of the programme in Dubai. Candidates should have extensive teaching experience at undergraduate level in the Biomedical Sciences and can teach and assess across a wide range of biomedical disciplines, with experience in teaching human physiology considered advantageous.

You will contribute to a range of educational activities including small group teaching, lectures and practical classes, and you will adopt innovative teaching methods. You will demonstrate academic citizenship, develop strong working relationships with staff and students, and ensure your activities positively influence others. Teaching is likely to include substantial contribution to teaching management and delivery of assessment at all levels, in collaboration with Biomedical Science module leads at Edgbaston and the Birmingham International Academy. You will engage in student recruitment and widening participation/outreach activities and support student development.

You will work closely with the Head of CMH Subject Group, Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, the Head of Education for the School and Programme Directors for the BSc and MSci in Biomedical Science (Dubai and Edgbaston).

Main Duties
Education

You will contribute across teaching and learning activities:

  • Lead on teaching delivery and assessment on a range of Biomedical Science modules at undergraduate level, coordinated with leads at the Edgbaston campus.
  • Lead on teaching delivery and assessment for the Foundation programme in Dubai, coordinated with leads on the Dubai campus and the Birmingham International Academy.
  • Develop and apply innovative teaching approaches to enable enhanced student learning.
  • Contribute to the development and management of assessment strategies within the School.
  • Contribute to educational projects within the School/College/Institute, including dissemination of findings at conferences and in publications.
  • Engage with Careers Connect and external stakeholders to develop placement opportunities for the Biomedical Science programme.
  • Advance teaching practice within their modules and the School.
  • Play an important role in student academic support and inform teaching practice through discipline-based research.
  • Engage in personal professional development in teaching, including reflection on teaching using feedback to enhance learning.
  • Contribute to recruitment and admission of students.

Further teaching responsibilities may include planning, designing inclusive curriculum content, collaboration with colleagues, and using digital resources to support learning and assessment (including potential live sessions between Dubai and Birmingham).

  • Teaching and examining Biomedical Science modules at undergraduate and Foundation programme levels.
  • Designing, reviewing and refining teaching approaches and encouraging others to do the same.
  • Working with colleagues to design and deliver teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Utilising digital resources/environments effectively to support learning and assessment.
  • Undertaking supervision, marking and examining where appropriate.
Management/Administration

Contribute to School administration and programme delivery in Dubai, including:

  • Managing the delivery of the Biomedical Science programme in Dubai and coordinating with colleagues in Dubai and Edgbaston.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to implement and deliver the Dubai Biomedical Science programme and other teaching activity.
  • Contributing to administrative activities within the University (e.g., appeals panels, working groups).
  • Contributing to widening participation, schools outreach and public engagement.
  • Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion and monitoring compliance with related policies.
Citizenship

Person Specification
  • A PhD or equivalent in a biomedical discipline.
  • Excellence in delivering biomedical education, management and administration.
  • Experience in module design and teaching across biomedical subjects; physiology expertise is highly desirable.
  • Strong working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Skills in motivating and mentoring others.
  • Evidence of scholarship in education (e.g., Fellowship of HEA, PGCert or equivalent).
Teaching
  • Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes.
  • Experience in developing effective approaches to learning and teaching.
Management/Administration
  • Ability to contribute to School/programme management processes and resource planning.
  • Understanding of broader management/administration processes.
  • Experience championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and monitoring compliance with policies.
  • Ability to identify issues impacting protected groups and take appropriate action.
