Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a talented Production Support Engineer for a 100% remote US-based position within the Veterans Affairs department. The role requires strong cloud, OS, scripting, and governance experience to support complex application systems.

Ideal candidates have 8+ years in systems engineering or related fields, including production environments, and must be eligible for a Public Trust clearance. US Citizenship is required.

Qualifications

• Experience with AWS and/or Azure Cloud environments and related services.
• Proven track record managing and maintaining large-scale production systems.
• Strong proficiency with Linux/Unix and Windows operating systems.
• Experience with system administration tasks including user management, permissions, and monitoring.
• Proficiency in scripting for automation (Python, Bash, PowerShell).
• Experience with automation tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef, SaltStack).
• Knowledge of cloud-native technologies and IaC (CloudFormation).
• Experience with monitoring tools (Dynatrace, Science Logic, CloudWatch).
• Ability to troubleshoot and optimize system performance and reliability.
• Understanding of network protocols, firewalls, and VPN setup.
• Experience with network monitoring and diagnostics.
• Experience with secure production practices and audits.
• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and Git workflows (GitHub Actions, CodeBuild/CodeDeploy).
• Familiarity with databases (AWS RDS SQL Server, Oracle).
• Strong documentation and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform high-level operational support of complex application cloud systems.
• Develop solutions to routines problems of limited scope.
• Follow standard practices in analyzing data to derive answers.
• Detect, isolate, document, report, and resolve outages in scientific workstations.
• Document problems in logging and discrepancy tools.
• Collaborate with customers on day-to-day activities.
• Respond to user calls regarding hardware and software issues; escalate when needed.
• Communicate status of key problem statuses to users and management.
• Maintain computing infrastructure and perform installations.
• Implement continuous improvement via IT systems and procedures.
• Maintain inventory of system assets and ensure VA compliance.
• Provide documentation, training, and other duties as assigned.
