Job summary

Advocate Health is seeking a full-time Inpatient Codet (Coder I-III level) to perform complex inpatient coding across service lines including cardiology, neurology, and oncology. The role requires ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding proficiency, adherence to coding guidelines, and collaboration with CDI and clinical teams.

Will work a 40-hour week, Monday–Friday, with potential remote approval for listed states.

Qualifications

• Advanced profiency of ICD, CPT and HCPCS coding guidelines; knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
• Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office and electronic mail; experience with electronic coding systems or applications.
• Excellent written and spoken communication and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent organization, prioritization, and reading comprehension skills.
• Excellent analytical skills with high attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgement.
• Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to take initiative and collaborate with others.

Responsibilities

• Review complex inpatient documentation to assign diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS.
• Adhere to organizational and department policies to ensure efficient work processes.
• Code high-dollar and long length of stay cases for all patient types.
• Follow up and obtain clarification of inaccurate documentation as needed.
• Serve as a subject matter expert to Coding department leaders and peers; suggest policy changes as needed to align with regulations.
• Maintain continuing education by attending webinars and reviewing CPT/HCPCS updates and coding clinics.
• Adhere to Standards of Ethical Coding and official coding guidelines; ensure proper reimbursement.
• Collaborate with CDI and Quality teams to match DRG and reconcile Medicare cases from a CDI perspective.
• Communicate with clinicians regarding disease processes to ensure accurate coding.
• Participate in payer audits and meetings as a coding resource.
• Attend meetings with clinical teams regarding code updates for complex specialties.
• Maintain patient record confidentiality and report any non-compliant practices.
