Job summary

SOLV Energy, Inc. is seeking a Design Engineer II, Substation to own the preliminary substation design for utility-scale solar and BESS projects.

This role is the primary technical owner from BD kickoff through Design-to-Preconstruction handoff, coordinating inputs across engineering disciplines while ensuring alignment with requirements and schedules. The position is fully remote in the United States, with responsibilities spanning design development, risk assessment, and client communications.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of 3+ years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar software.
• Strong understanding of IEEE, NEC, NESC, and related standards.
• Familiarity with utility interconnection requirements and contract language.
• Effective communication and leadership skills; ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
• Ability to travel up to 10%.

Responsibilities

• Own the first-pass preliminary substation design approach for assigned pursuits and projects by reviewing requirements to define the design basis, assumptions, equipment, layouts, quantities, risks, and open items for the 10% design deliverable.
• Review client documents, technical exhibits, PPAs, interconnection agreements, utility and ISO handbooks, and owner standards to identify requirements, risks, and scope beyond SOLV standards.
• Serve as the primary substation design SME and coordinate inputs from engineering consultants, procurement, estimating, scheduling, and other specialties.
• Lead development of the 10% substation design, including single-line diagrams and general arrangement drawings for pricing support.
• Coordinate with estimating and scheduling to ensure alignment of design, quantities, scope narrative, schedule, and commercial assumptions.
• Review estimates for completeness and identify gaps, owner-furnished equipment, contingencies, and clarify scope items.
