Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
• Minimum of 3+ years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
• Proficiency in electrical design software (AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar).
• Strong understanding of substation design principles and standards (IEEE, NEC, NESC).
• Knowledge of building codes and solar development regulations.
• Ability to travel up to 10%.

Responsibilities

• Preliminary Substation Design and Technical Ownership.
• Own the first-pass preliminary substation design approach for assigned pursuits and projects by defining design basis, key assumptions, equipment, layouts, quantities, risks, and open items for 10% design.
• Review client documents, technical exhibits, PPAs, interconnection agreements, and related project information to identify requirements, risks, opportunities, and scope outside SOLV standards.
• Serve as the primary substation design subject matter expert coordinating inputs from engineering consultants, procurement, estimating, scheduling, NERC support, revenue metering, security, and other specialties.
• Lead development of the 10% substation design, including single-line diagrams and general arrangement drawings to support estimating with pricing.
• Coordinate with estimating and scheduling to align preliminary design, quantities, scope narrative, schedule, and commercial assumptions.
• Review estimates for technical completeness and identify gaps, exclusions, and items requiring clarification or escalation.
• Deliver the owner-reviewed preliminary substation design to estimating and BD per the project stage-gate schedule.
• Participate in client meetings to review technical exhibits, explain assumptions, identify risks, and clarify requirements outside SOLV standards.
• Support contractual exhibit reviews and technical responses to facilitate LNTP, escalating material commitments and significant risk.
• Communicate design decisions, open items, risks, and inputs clearly to stakeholders.
• Prepare and issue proposal requests to EORs and engineering subcontractors.
• Review received proposals for scope, deliverables, exclusions, and alignment.
• Align EOR/subcontractor proposals with scope, estimate, schedule, LNTP requirements, and final handoff.
• Prepare engineering scope, proposal information, schedule inputs, coordination details, and risks for handoff to Preconstruction Engineering.
• Support handoff by transferring RFIs, client comments, design risks, procurement constraints, and unresolved items to HV engineering.
• Review and approve preliminary substation design deliverables for alignment with requirements.
• Propose alternatives and resolve design challenges with internal teams and clients.
• Maintain thorough documentation of design iterations, decisions, and handoff materials.
• Suggest improvements for department processes and standards.
• Assign and coordinate work for substation designers, engineers, and interns; review quality and schedule.
• Mentor junior team members and identify training needs in substation design and related disciplines.
