Job description
Summary:

At Ascent Geomatics Solutions, the Civil Engineer provides civil site design and engineering support for projects across the Oil & Gas and Renewable Energy sectors. This role is responsible for producing and coordinating grading, drainage, and erosion control deliverables that support oil and gas well pads and facilities, midstream infrastructure, and renewable energy developments including solar, wind, and BESS. The Civil Engineer works closely with Project Managers and internal teams to ensure designs are accurate, constructible, and aligned with client requirements, applicable jurisdictional standards, and Ascent’s QA/QC expectations.

This position is client-facing and contributes to project execution through strong technical ownership, responsive communication, and consistent deliverable quality. The Civil Engineer is expected to apply proficient AutoCAD Civil 3D skills, complete grading and drainage calculations, and develop erosion control and stormwater deliverables. This role researches permitting and design requirements for new or unfamiliar jurisdictions, identifies permitting needs and compliance requirements that impact scope, and elevates unclear items for interpretation and alignment with senior engineering leadership. The Civil Engineer will serve as Engineer of Record for assigned scopes, signing and sealing deliverables with an appropriate level of oversight based on project complexity and experience.

Expected Results in the role:
  • Deliver complete, accurate civil design packages (grading, drainage, erosion control/stormwater) that meet client requirements, jurisdictional standards, and Ascent QA/QC expectations.
  • Produce engineered designs and supporting calculations in AutoCAD Civil 3D with documented assumptions and constructible details.
  • Proactively identify permitting and design requirements by researching jurisdictional standards and project constraints, flagging ambiguities early and coordinating alignment with senior engineering leadership and the Project Manager.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record for assigned scopes by performing final reviews and signing/sealing deliverables within defined complexity thresholds, escalating higher-risk items for senior review.
  • Support reliable project execution through responsive client communication (with PM support as needed) and timely status/risk updates to protect deadlines and client expectations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Project Execution & Design Delivery

  • Develops civil site design deliverables for energy and infrastructure projects, including grading, drainage, utility layout, and related construction details in support of plan sets and exhibits.
  • Produces and maintains design surfaces, corridors (as applicable), alignments, profiles, and plan production using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Prepares and updates civil engineering calculations and supporting documentation to support design decisions and deliverable completeness.
  • Coordinates internal design inputs and incorporates project requirements, constraints, and client feedback with support from the Project Manager.

Permitting & Jurisdictional Requirements

  • Researches applicable jurisdictional standards, permitting requirements, and design criteria for counties, municipalities, and agencies relevant to assigned projects.
  • Identifies permitting needs and requirements that affect design approach, deliverable scope, schedule, or risk, and communicates findings to the Project Manager and senior engineering leadership.
  • Flags unclear, conflicting, or higher-risk requirements early and collaborates with senior engineers/engineering manager to align on interpretation and approach.

Drainage, Erosion Control & Stormwater Design

  • Develops grading and drainage designs and supporting calculations appropriate to the project scope and jurisdictional expectations.
  • Produces erosion control and stormwater deliverables (plans, notes, details, and supporting documentation) consistent with project requirements and applicable standards.
  • Supports constructible, field-practical design by considering site constraints, sequencing, and typical construction methods within the project’s intent.

Engineer of Record, QA/QC & Technical Accountability

  • Serves as Engineer of Record for assigned scopes by completing technical reviews and signing/sealing deliverables within defined complexity thresholds and approved scope.
  • Applies Ascent QA/QC standards, including self-checks and peer review participation, to ensure deliverables are accurate, complete, and consistent.
  • Escalates higher-complexity design elements, novel jurisdictional issues, or elevated risk items for senior review prior to finalization and sealing.

Coordination & Communication

  • Participates in client meetings and design coordination discussions as a technical representative, with PM or senior support as needed based on project complexity.
  • Coordinates with Survey, GIS, Permitting, and Project Management teams to support integrated project execution; provides clear status updates and flags risks or scope impacts that could affect deadlines or client expectations.

General Duties

  • Maintains organized project documentation, including calculations, assumptions, design inputs, and coordination notes to support traceability and QA/QC.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support project delivery and department objectives.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility.
  • The Civil Engineer may provide day-to-day technical guidance, mentoring, and onboarding support to junior engineering staff and CAD designers, including review feedback and support with standards, templates, and design practices.
Required Skills & Abilities:

Required

  • Ability to perform final technical reviews and exercise professional judgment within assigned complexity thresholds; escalates elevated-risk items appropriately.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D for grading, surfaces, alignments/profiles, plan production, and quantity/support workflows as applicable, with demonstrated capability in grading and drainage design and supporting calculations for land development, industrial grading, or similar site development work.
  • Demonstrated capability developing erosion control and stormwater deliverables (plans, notes, details, and supporting documentation) aligned with jurisdictional standards, including the ability to research and apply jurisdictional design criteria and permitting requirements and elevate items requiring interpretation.
  • Strong quality ownership: self-checking work, documenting assumptions, and producing complete, accurate deliverables.
  • Client-facing communication skills: able to participate in meetings, explain design intent, and respond professionally and promptly to coordination needs.
  • Strong organization and time management skills; able to manage priorities and maintain schedule reliability with PM support.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting energy-sector civil site design (oil & gas well pads/facilities, midstream infrastructure) and/or renewables (solar, wind, BESS).
  • Familiarity with Colorado and/or regional jurisdictional standards, drainage criteria, and permitting processes in markets where Ascent operates.
  • Experience with SWPPP/DESC/GESC documentation and typical stormwater compliance workflows (as applicable by jurisdiction).
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers/CAD designers through design reviews and onboarding support.
  • Working knowledge of hydrology/hydraulics tools or workflows used for drainage analysis (software varies by client/jurisdiction).
  • Experience coordinating across Survey, GIS, Permitting, and Construction/Field teams on integrated project delivery.
Required Education, Certifications, and Experience:

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or closely related field) from an accredited program.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Colorado or ability to obtain Colorado licensure through reciprocity within an agreed timeframe.
  • 1–5 years of demonstrated professional practice as a licensed PE, including experience reviewing and signing/sealing civil engineering deliverables for applicable project scopes.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting energy-sector civil projects (well pads/facilities, midstream infrastructure) and/or renewable energy developments (solar, wind, BESS).
  • Experience working with multi-jurisdictional design criteria and permitting processes (counties, municipalities, and agency standards).
  • Prior experience in a consulting environment with client-facing design coordination.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
  • Reliable internet access and a designated, quiet workspace are required.
  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods, including regular use of a keyboard, mouse, and multiple monitors.
Other Need-to-know items:
  • Remote work is acceptable.
  • Standard work hours are Monday–Friday, generally aligned to Mountain Standard Time (MST), to support collaboration with clients and internal teams. Flexibility is supported within continental U.S. time zones, provided core team availability and communication are maintained.
  • Work hours may vary based on business needs. Additional hours may occasionally be required to meet project deadlines, and all time worked must be accurately recorded in accordance with company policy.
  • Travel may be required on occasion for team collaboration, training, or project support.
  • Employment is limited to candidates authorized to work in the United States and able to work within continental U.S. time zones.
