Job summary

Five Star Solutions is seeking a Patient Billing Specialist to assist patients with payments, billing education, and insurance verification. You will navigate EMR systems and billing policies to deliver accurate, empathetic support.

The role is remote for eligible states, with base pay of $15/hr, plus a nightly/weekend differential of $1/hr. Training is provided, and full-time benefits begin after 60 days of employment.

Qualifications

• Customer service or call center experience required.
• Healthcare billing, insurance, or claims experience strongly preferred.
• Payment processing or financial transaction experience preferred.
• High school diploma or GED required; additional billing or healthcare education a plus.
• Technical proficiency with EMR systems and standard computer applications.
• Ability to work independently in a remote or virtual environment.
• Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English.
• Background check required in accordance with applicable laws.

Responsibilities

• Process patient payments via phone following financial responsibility policies.
• Create/update payment plans per guidelines.
• Ensure transaction accuracy, proper documentation, and data integrity.
• Explain claim notes, balances, and billing outcomes to patients.
• Verify/update insurance information for completeness and accuracy.
• Update insurance data within the EMR and resubmit claims.
• Educate patients on coinsurance, deductibles, and timely filing.
• Identify discrepancies and coordinate with internal teams to resolve issues.
• Research account history to determine root causes of billing or payment concerns.
• Recommend resolutions and next steps per policies.
• Maintain professionalism and empathy in sensitive financial discussions.
• Utilize billing systems, EMR platforms, and knowledge resources.
• Navigate multiple systems while assisting patients.
• Adhere to documentation, privacy, and security requirements.
• Maintain schedule adherence and availability during hours.
• Complete client-mandated training and participate in uptraining.
• Uphold HIPAA and confidentiality standards.
