Job summary

Five Star Solutions is seeking a Patient Billing Specialist to support patients with payment processing, billing education, insurance verification, and claims inquiries. This remote role requires HIPAA awareness and strong communication to educate patients on billing concepts.

Starting pay is $15/hour with a $1 differential for nights and weekends. Hours are 7:00am–7:00pm CST, M-F, with 40 hours weekly and paid training of about 2 weeks. Benefits eligibility begins after 60 days of employment.

Qualifications

• Customer service or call center experience required.
• Healthcare billing, insurance, or claims experience strongly preferred.
• Payment processing or financial transaction experience preferred.
• High school diploma or GED required; additional billing or healthcare education a plus.
• Technical proficiency with EMR systems and standard computer applications.
• Ability to work independently in a remote or virtual environment.
• Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English.
• Background check required in accordance with applicable laws.

Responsibilities

• Process patient payments via phone following financial responsibility policies.
• Create and maintain payment plans according to guidelines.
• Ensure transaction accuracy, proper documentation, and data integrity.
• Explain claim notes, balances, and billing outcomes to patients clearly.
• Verify and update insurance information for completeness and accuracy.
• Update insurance data in the EMR and resubmit claims as needed.
• Educate patients on billing concepts including deductibles, coinsurance, copays, and timely filing.
• Identify discrepancies and coordinate with internal teams to resolve issues.
• Research account history to determine root causes of billing or payment concerns.
• Maintain professionalism and empathy during financial discussions.
• Utilize billing systems, EMR platforms, tools, and knowledge resources.
• Adhere to documentation, privacy, and security requirements.
• Maintain schedule adherence and availability during assigned hours.
• Complete client-mandated training and participate in uptraining and cross-training.
