Job summary

Pearson is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team of 5–8 software engineers on the Enterprise Learning & Skills platform. The role focuses on people, delivery, and growth, guiding design discussions and maintaining high engineering standards.

You’ll partner with Product, Customer Success, and vendors, drive onboarding, and ensure timely delivery while upholding security and ethical practices across all shipped work.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience and 2+ years managing or formally leading a software engineering team.
• Familiar with Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, PostgreSQL; API management, cloud computing, DevOps practices, and software design; able to guide discussions and evaluate trade-offs.
• Proven track record of running a team’s daily delivery reliably with coding/QA standards and on-time delivery.
• Strong problem-solving skills with proactive issue identification and practical resolutions.
• Exceptional collaboration and communication with engineers, stakeholders, and vendors.
• Experience onboarding and developing engineers, shortening ramp-up times and growing team capability.
• Sound judgment on when to resolve issues locally or escalate, with timely escalation when needed.
• Adaptability and commitment to continuous learning as platform and tooling evolve.
• Strong understanding of information and data security fundamentals and an ethical, customer-centric approach.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and support a team of 5–8 engineers building Ruby on Rails services and React frontends, owning well-being, performance, and output.
• Plan and allocate daily and sprint work, monitor progress, and keep projects on track with clear priorities.
• Troubleshoot obstacles, clarify requirements, and coordinate handoffs across engineers, teams, and vendors.
• Triage bugs and production issues to minimize disruption for customers.
• Maintain coding and QA standards, code review coverage, test thoroughness, and documentation.
• Provide real-time feedback, conduct regular 1:1s, and celebrate milestones while recognizing individuals.
• Own onboarding and skill development of new team members and reduce ramp-up time.
• Identify process improvements at team level and escalate higher-impact issues to senior leadership.
• Champion responsible use of AI-assisted development tools for coding, testing, and documentation.
