Job summary

Pearson is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team of 5–8 software engineers on the Enterprise Learning & Skills (ELS) engineering team. The role focuses on people, delivery, and engineering practices for a large-scale, API-driven platform used globally to issue and verify digital credentials.

You will plan work, remove blockers, guide design discussions, and partner with Product, Customer Success, and external vendors to ensure reliable, well-sequenced delivery.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience and 2+ years managing or formally leading a software engineering team.
• Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, PostgreSQL and API management; cloud computing, DevOps, and software design.
• Proven track record of reliable daily delivery with adherence to coding and QA standards.
• Excellent collaboration and communication with engineers, stakeholders, and external vendors.
• Experience onboarding and developing engineers with evidence of ramp-up improvements.
• Adaptability and continuous learning as platforms and tooling evolve.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and support a team of 5–8 engineers building Ruby on Rails services and React frontends, owning wellbeing, performance, and output.
• Plan and allocate daily and sprint work, monitor progress, and keep projects on track.
• Troubleshoot obstacles, clarify requirements, and coordinate handoffs across engineers, teams, and vendors.
• Triage bugs and production issues, minimizing disruption for customers.
• Maintain coding and QA standards, test thoroughness, and team documentation.
• Provide real-time feedback; conduct regular 1:1s; recognize contributions.
• Own onboarding and skill development of new team members.
• Identify process improvements at team level and escalate high-impact issues.
• Champion the responsible use of AI-assisted development tools across the team.
• Uphold secure, ethical, and resilient engineering practices across everything shipped.
