Job summary

Pearson is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team of 5–8 software engineers on the Enterprise Learning & Skills engineering team. The role focuses on people and delivery, owning day-to-day health, output, and growth while guiding design discussions and engineering practices in a large-scale, API-driven platform.

You'll coordinate with Product, Customer Success, and external vendors, guide onboarding, and ensure high-quality, secure delivery.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience and 2+ years managing or formally leading a software engineering team.
• Working familiarity with Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, PostgreSQL and API management, cloud computing, DevOps practices.
• Proven track record of reliably running a team’s daily delivery with strong coding/QA standards.
• Strong problem-solving and proactive decision-making abilities.
• Exceptional collaboration and communication with engineers, stakeholders, and vendors.
• Experience onboarding and developing engineers with evidence of ramp-up time reduction.
• Sound judgment on issue resolution and escalation to leadership.
• Adaptability and continuous learning in evolving tech and tooling.
• Strong understanding of information/data security fundamentals and ethical decisions.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and support a team of engineers building Ruby on Rails services and React frontends.
• Plan and allocate daily and sprint work; monitor progress against delivery schedules.
• Coordinate handoffs across engineers, teams, and vendors to resolve blockers.
• Triage bugs and production issues with attention to customer impact.
• Maintain coding, QA, and documentation standards; ensure code review coverage and test thoroughness.
• Provide real-time feedback; conduct regular 1:1s; recognize team milestones.
• Own onboarding and skill development for new team members.
• Identify and propose team-level process improvements; escalate complex issues.
