Job summary

Pearson is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a 5–8 person software team on the Enterprise Learning & Skills platform. You will ensure health, output, and growth, prioritizing work, removing blockers, and guiding design discussions without writing production code.

You'll collaborate with Product, Customer Success, and vendors to translate requirements into reliable delivery, maintaining high quality and engineering standards in a fast-paced, AI-enabled environment.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience and 2+ years managing or leading a software engineering team.
• Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, PostgreSQL and API management, cloud computing, DevOps practices.
• Proven track record of reliable daily delivery and adherence to coding/QA standards.
• Strong problem-solving skills and proactive collaboration with stakeholders.
• Experience onboarding and developing engineers; able to shorten ramp-up time.
• Judgment on when to resolve locally vs escalate to senior engineering leadership.
• Adaptability and commitment to continuous learning as the team and tech evolve.
• Solid understanding of information and data security fundamentals.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and support a team of 5–8 engineers building Ruby on Rails services and React frontends.
• Plan and allocate daily and sprint work; monitor progress and keep projects on track.
• Troubleshoot obstacles, clarify requirements, and coordinate handoffs with vendors.
• Triage bugs and production issues with attention to customer impact.
• Maintain coding and QA standards, code review coverage, testing, and documentation.
• Provide real-time feedback, conduct regular 1:1s, and recognize team milestones.
• Own onboarding and skill development of new team members; reduce ramp-up time.
• Identify process improvements and prompt escalation of higher-impact issues.
• Champion AI-assisted development tools and integrate them responsibly.
• Uphold secure, ethical, and resilient engineering practices across shipped work.
