Job summary

Pearson is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team of 5–8 software engineers building Ruby on Rails services and React frontends. You’ll own day-to-day health, output, and growth, ensuring work meets quality standards and delivers to customers.

You’ll guide design discussions, set priorities, onboard new members, and collaborate with Product, Customer Success, and vendors. The role is remote, with opportunities to influence enterprise learning platform globally.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience.
• 2+ years managing or leading a software engineering team.
• Familiar with Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, PostgreSQL; able to guide design discussions and trade-offs.
• Proven track record of reliable daily delivery and adherence to coding/QA standards.
• Strong collaboration and communication with engineers, stakeholders, and vendors.
• Experience onboarding and developing engineers to shorten ramp-up time.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and support a team of 5–8 engineers building Rails services and React frontends, owning well-being and output.
• Plan and allocate daily and sprint work, monitor progress, and keep projects on track.
• Troubleshoot blockers, clarify requirements, and coordinate handoffs across engineers, teams, and vendors.
• Triage bugs and production issues with attention to detail, minimizing customer disruption.
• Maintain standards of quality, including coding/QA, test thoroughness, and team docs.
• Provide real-time feedback; run 1:1s; celebrate milestones and recognize contributions.
• Own onboarding and skill development of new team members; reduce ramp-up time.
• Identify and implement team-level process improvements; escalate high-impact issues when needed.
• Champion responsible use of AI-assisted development tools for coding, testing, docs.
• Uphold secure, ethical, and resilient engineering practices across shipped work.
