Job summary

Pearson is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a 5-8 person software team building scalable API-driven platforms for Enterprise Learning & Skills. You will guide design discussions, ensure quality, and value strong engineering practices while mentoring engineers and coordinating with Product, Customer Success, and vendors.

You will own onboarding, set priorities, and support continuous learning, with a focus on secure, ethical engineering and AI-assisted tooling adoption.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience and 2+ years managing or formally leading a software engineering team.
• Working familiarity with Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, PostgreSQL and API management, cloud computing, DevOps practices.
• Proven track record of delivering reliably with coding and QA standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and support a team of 5-8 engineers building Ruby on Rails services and React frontends, owning well-being and output.
• Plan and allocate daily and sprint work, monitor progress against delivery schedules, and keep projects on track with clear priorities.
• Troubleshoot obstacles, clarify requirements, and coordinate handoffs across engineers, teams, and vendors.
• Triage bugs and production issues with attention to detail, minimizing disruption to customers.
• Maintain standards of quality, coding/QA, code review coverage, test thoroughness, and team documentation.
• Provide real-time feedback; run regular 1:1s; celebrate milestones; recognize individual contributions.
• Own onboarding and skill development for new team members; reduce ramp-up time.
• Identify and introduce process improvements; escalate unresolved issues to senior leadership.
• Champion AI-assisted development tools; ensure responsible use and validation.
• Uphold secure, ethical, and resilient engineering practices across releases.
