Job summary

Pearson is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a 5–8 person software team building a global, API-driven credential platform. You will guide design discussions, enforce engineering practices, and remove blockers while collaborating with Product, Customer Success, and external vendors.

You don't write production code daily but provide strong technical guidance and people leadership to ensure quality and reliable delivery.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience
• 2+ years managing or formally leading a software engineering team
• Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, PostgreSQL and API management
• Proven track record of reliable delivery and QA adherence
• Experience onboarding and developing engineers and coordinating with Product, Customer Success and vendors

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and support a team of 5–8 engineers building Ruby on Rails services and React frontends
• Plan and allocate daily and sprint work, monitor progress and keep projects on track
• Troubleshoot obstacles, clarify requirements, and coordinate handoffs across engineers, teams, and vendors
• Triage bugs and production issues with attention to detail to minimize customer disruption
• Maintain standards of quality and consistency within coding, QA, reviews, tests and docs
• Give real-time feedback, conduct regular 1:1s and recognize team milestones
• Own onboarding and skill development for new team members
• Identify and implement team-level process improvements and escalate high-impact issues
• Champion the use of AI-assisted development tools for coding, testing, and documentation
• Uphold secure, ethical, and resilient engineering practices across everything shipped
