Job description
Position Overview

The Senior Technical Safety Engineer is responsible for providing expert-level technical safety engineering support across all phases of an FPSO project — from concept and FEED to detailed design, construction, commissioning, and operations. This role ensures that safety principles, regulatory requirements, and risk management strategies are effectively embedded into design and execution, protecting personnel, assets, and the environment.

Key Responsibilities
Design Safety & Risk Management
  • Lead and execute safety studies and reviews, including HAZID, HAZOP, SIL, QRA, Fire & Explosion Analysis (FEA), Escape, Evacuation & Rescue Analysis (EERA), and Dropped Object Studies.
  • Develop and maintain the Safety Philosophy, Safety Design Basis, and Safety Case documentation for the FPSO.
  • Ensure compliance with company standards, client specifications, and relevant international codes (e.g. API, ISO, ABS, DNV, IEC).
  • Perform consequence modeling (fire, explosion, toxic dispersion) and assess risk reduction measures.
  • Review and validate design deliverables related to fire & gas detection, active and passive fire protection systems, emergency shutdown (ESD) systems, and hazardous area classification.
Engineering Deliverables
  • Prepare and review key safety engineering deliverables such as:
    Fire and Gas Detection Layouts
Escape Route and Safety Equipment Layouts
    Firewater Demand and Hydraulic Calculations
    Fire & Explosion Protection Philosophy
    Hazardous Area Classification Drawings
    Safety Equipment Lists and Datasheets
  • Ensure integration of safety systems with process, mechanical, electrical, and marine disciplines.
  • Support design verification and safety interface management between topsides, hull, and marine systems.
Project Execution
  • Provide safety input to design reviews (3D model reviews, constructability, operability, and maintainability).
  • Participate in project risk reviews, constructability assessments, and commissioning safety planning.
  • Support procurement by reviewing vendor packages for compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Interface with Classification Societies, Authorities, and Clients on safety-related submissions and approvals.
Operational Support
  • Support the development and review of operating procedures and emergency response plans.
  • Participate in offshore site visits, audits, and pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR).
  • Provide technical support during incident investigations and root cause analyses.
Qualifications & Experience

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical / Process / Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Postgraduate qualification or certification in Safety Engineering preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in Technical Safety Engineering, with at least 5 years in FPSO / offshore oil & gas projects.
  • Proven track record in conceptual and detailed design phases, risk assessment, and safety studies.
  • In-depth understanding of international safety standards and regulatory frameworks (e.g. IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, API, ISO, IEC).
  • Experience with risk analysis software (e.g. PHAST, FRED, SAFETI, FLACS, or equivalent).

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary inputs and manage priorities.
  • Proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and safety excellence.
Certifications (Preferred):
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng / PE) or equivalent professional recognition.
  • TUV Functional Safety (SIL) certification.
  • Formal training in HAZOP Leadership / Risk Assessment Techniques.
