Overview

An audio-visual lighting (AVL) technician sets up, operates, and maintains audio, visual, and lighting equipment for events. Their responsibilities include installing and troubleshooting systems like microphones, projectors, and lighting boards, as well as providing on-site technical support during events.

Key responsibilities
  • Setup and operation: Install, set up, and operate AVL equipment for live or recorded events, such as concerts, conferences, and meetings.
  • Maintenance and repair: Perform regular maintenance and troubleshoot problems with AVL and control systems to ensure proper functioning.
  • Technical support: Provide real-time, on-site technical support to resolve issues with audio, video, and lighting during events.
  • System upgrades: Implement system upgrades and improvements to enhance performance and reliability.
  • Logistics: Manage and maintain an inventory of AVL equipment.
  • End-user training: Train end-users on how to operate the installed systems.
Required skills and qualifications
  • Technical skills: Experience with a variety of equipment, including microphones, sound boards, speakers, projectors, video cameras, and lighting consoles.
  • Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues with AV, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Problem-solving: Strong analytical skills to address and solve problems as they arise.
  • Safety awareness: Knowledge of electrical safety procedures and ability to conduct risk assessments.
